Lotus Privées

Après le GP du Mexique Graham Hill a eu un terrible accident dans une course secondaire dans lequel il s'est brisé les deux jambes, Après avoir consacré sa convalescence a écrire ses mémoires qui remportent un beau succès, il est déjà de retour à la compétition. Il pilote toujours une Lotus 49, mais cette fois-ci elle a été repeinte en bleu nuit pour le compte de Rob Walker. En attendant de disposer du nouveau modèle, il compte bien sur ses réseaux avec l'usine pour disposer d'une voiture aussi compétitive que celles du Team officiel.

Peter Lovely, lui, ne nourrit pas de tels espoirs. Le sympathique californien alignera aussi un Lotus 49-Cosworth mais celle là sera d'occasion et il ne peut compter que sur lui même pour faire bonne figure. On devrait aussi voir, uniquement à Kyalami, quelques Lotus de secondes mains conduits par des pilotes locaux.

McLeod avait envisagé de faire de même, mais l'affaire ne s'est pas faite, il a donc, pour la première fois de sa carrière, choisi de rouler français.

He still manages a Lotus 49, but this time it was repainted in dark blue on behalf of Rob Walker. March est l'association de quatre jeunes passionnés britanniques: Max Mosley, un avocat de 30 ans, et ancien pilote de course directeur de l'équipe, Alan Rees, ancien manager de l'écurie Winkelmann de Formule 2, le directeur sportif, Graham Coaker, venu de l'industrie et passé chez McLaren, chargé de la production, et enfin le directeur technique Robin Herd, ancien ingénieur aéronautique ayant participé au projet Concorde et à la Cosworth 4WD devenue McLeod.
Herd a conçu la 701, une monoplace très conventionnelle propulsée par un V8 Ford-Cosworth. Sa seule particularité vient de ses réservoirs latéraux carrossés en aile d'avion inversée, censés ajouter de l'appui. Cette 701 est prête à être vendue à qui le désirera. March engage une équipe officielle dirigée par Mosley, avec deux excellents pilotes très expérimentés: Chris Amon et Jo Siffert.
Une troisième voiture est engagée par Andy Granatelli, le PDG de la compagnie pétrolière STP. Elle est confiée à la vedette américaine Mario Andretti.
 

March is the association of four young British enthusiasts: Max Mosley, a 30-year-old lawyer, and former team racing driver, Alan Rees, former manager of the Formula 2 Winkelmann team, sports director, Graham Coaker from industry and McLaren, production manager, and technical director Robin Herd, a former aeronautical engineer who participated in the Concorde project and the Cosworth 4WD which became McLeod.
Herd designed the 701, a very conventional single-seater powered by a Ford-Cosworth V8. Its only peculiarity comes from its side tanks coated in wing of aircraft reversed, supposed to add support. This 701 is ready to be sold to anyone who wants it. March hires an official team led by Mosley, with two very experienced drivers: Chris Amon and Jo Siffert.
A third car is engaged by Andy Granatelli, the CEO of the oil company STP. It is entrusted to the American star Mario Andretti.

Don Pedro de la Zapata a décidé de réduire les frais. Les résultats de Miguel Garcia (alias Razor Ramon) n'étant pas au niveau espéré, Don Pedro n'était pas prêt à continuer à financer la construction d'une voiture originale. Après avoir confié la construction de ses PZ à Serrurier en Afrique du Sud, puis à une équipe dissidente de BRM, cette fois il s'est contenté d'avheter "sur étagère" un châssis March. Du coup, il bénéficie lui aussi du couple Cosworth-Hewland qui semble en passe de dominer la F1, au moins quantitativement.
Miguel Garcia, lui, semble heureux de pouvoir se mesurer avec des pointures comme Stewart, Amon ou Siffert à armes égales, bref, tout le monde est content... Mais pour combien de temps?

L'invasion March ne s'arrête pas à l'équipe d'usine et aux teams reconnus comme Tyrrell et DPZ, un 10ème châssis a déjà été vendu à Colin Crabbe, qu'on a déjà vu aligner un Cooper, puis une McLaren l'an dernier. L'écurie Antique Automobiles qu'il dirige alignera cette fois le jeune et très prometteur pilote suédois Ronnie Peterson, par ailleurs pilote March en F2. Et on parle déjà d'une piste en Allemagne. On aurait aperçu une March anonyme aux couleurs argentées tourner à Hockenheim...

Matra

Bien que tenante du titre, la MS80 se voit recalée par le nouveau règlement. En même temps, Matra ayant été racheté par Simca, concurrent de Ford, Jean-Luc Lagardère a décidé que le moment était venu de faire triompher une Formule 1 « 100% Matra ». Le V12 a été considérablement revu par Georges Martin. Malheureusement, après l' avoir testé Jackie Stewart a décidé que le Cosworth lui était supérieur et a quitté l'équipe, avec Tyrrell, Johnny Servoz-Gavin et certains membres du personnel technique clé. La nouvelle Matra-Simca MS120, œuvre de Gérard Ducarouge et Bernard Boyer, semble pourtant être une voiture prometteuse. L'inévitable Jean-Pierre Beltoise est à son volant, associé au jeune Henri Pescarolo, brillant coureur de la marque en endurance et en F2.

McLaren

Après s'être fourvoyé dans la construction d'une quatre roues motrices, Bruce McLaren suit une voie plus raisonnable pour cette saison. Avec Jo Marquart il présente une M14A, évolution tranquille de la M7 tirant les leçons apprises en F5000. Denny Hulme est toujours de l'aventure, et de plus en plus impliqué dans le développement des voitures. A 33 ans, Bruce aimerait raccrocher les gants pour se consacrer à la gestion de son usine. Il a fait une offre à Jackie Stewart qui l'a refusée. Il s'engage donc pour une année de courses supplémentaire.
Une troisième voiture sera alignée avec la collaboration d'Alfa Romeo, pour l'ancien pilote Ferrari Andrea de Adamich. Ainsi malgré l'abandon définitif de Cooper suite au décès de Lucien Bianchi, Alfa Romeo continuera d'équiper deux écuries, l'autre étant la Scuderia Centro Sud. Du coup ce sont Al Hawk et Antoine Yvon, qui avaient succédés aux frères Bianchi, qui se retrouvent à pied en ce début de saison.

McLeod

Plus que McLaren, Lotus ou Matra, qui perdirent quelques ressources en essayent de développer des voitures à 4 roues motrices, McLeod qui avait fait ce choix pour des raisons de sponsoring sort d'une saison en enfer. On l'a vu en fin de saison dernière en pourparlers avec Colin Chapman pour bénéficier d'une Lotus-client. Un choix raisonnable, bien dans la ligne de celui qu'il avait fait en 1968 en présentant une solide Brabham. Malheureusement, en ces temps de tension franco-britanniques, les sponsors de McLeod ont poussé vers une solution 100% française. Conrad McLeod s'est donc tourné vers Matra qui a recasé dans l'écurie bretonne un vieux chassis MS11 remis aux nouvelles normes propulsé tout de même par un moteur V12 identique à ceux de l'écurie principale. Plusieurs mécanos vus chez Alpine et Matra en F2 ont été recrutés et Conrad McLeod espère faire assez bonne figure pour convaincre ses soutiens de rester en F1. Un pari somme toute moins risqué que l'an passé.

McLeod

More than McLaren, Lotus or Matra, who were losing a few resources trying to develop 4WD cars, McLeod had made that choice for sponsorship reasons comes out of a season in hell. We saw him at the end of last season in talks with Colin Chapman to benefit from a Lotus-client. A reasonable choice, well in line with the one he had made in 1968 by presenting a solid Brabham. Unfortunately, in these times of Franco-British tension, McLeod's sponsors have pushed for a 100% French solution. Conrad McLeod therefore turned to Matra who recasted in the stable Breton an old chassis MS11 upgraded to the new standards propelled all the same by a V12 engine identical to those of the main stable. Several mechanics seen at Alpine and Matra in F2 were recruited and Conrad McLeod hopes to make good enough to convince his supporters to stay in F1. A gamble is far less risky than last year.

Priori-BRM

En intégrant Parnell comme Team Manager, BRM semblait tourner le dos à la fourniture de voitures aux privés. D'autant plus que pour ceux-ci le couple propulseur Cosworth-Hewland remporte les suffrages. C'est donc une surprise que les journalistes d'AutoSprint ont révélé. Le très jeune Riccardo Priori, soutenu par Koni, Pirelli et Agip a fait l'acquisition d'une BRM P139 avec laquelle il compte bien disputer la saison. Personne n'attendant rien de cet étrange attelage, il ne pourra surprendre qu'en bien !

Main car
T-Car

By integrating Parnell as Team Manager, BRM seemed to be turning its back on providing private cars. Especially as for them the Cosworth-Hewland thrusting couple won the votes. So it's a surprise that AutoSprint reporters have revealed. The very young Riccardo Priori, supported by Koni, Pirelli and Agip has acquired a BRM P139 with which he intends to compete the season. Nobody expecting anything from this strange team, he can only surprise in good!

Scuderia Centro Sud

Ferrari refusant de continuer à fournir des voitures pour des clients, la Scuderia Centro Sud s'était résolu en 1969 à construire son propre châssis; dessiné par Pinin Farina et Luigi Mennella, et équipé d'un moteur Alfa dérivé de l'Endurance. Deux cinquièmes places n'ayant pas suffit à garder sa motivation, Luigi Mennella a décidé de se laisser provisoirement le volant à sa charmante épouse Nathy et de se consacrer au développement du nouveau châssis. Etroitement dérivé de l'ancien, et toujours aussi élégant, il reste hélas propulsé par un moteur Alfa qui semble avoir de plus en plus de mal à suivre les Cosworth.

Surtees

Fatigué des piètres performances de BRM, John Surtees s'est décidé à franchir le pas: il crée lui-aussi sa propre équipe, le Team Surtees. Son ambition est de construire sa propre voiture mais en attendant il a acheté une McLaren M7C qu'il va piloter en début de saison.  Il espère ainsi échaper enfin aux tensions qu'il a connu dans toutes les écuries qu'il a connu : Ferrari, BRM et même Honda. Et il a déjà un plan pour sa McLaren, il la confiera ensuite à Bonnier.
