Salut tout le monde !
Moi c'est McLeod, Philippe a perdu ses notes du Nurburgring, alors je vous raconte.

Mais d'abord je me présente, je m'appelle Conrad McLeod, vu que mon grand-père est un soldat écossais tombé amoureux de son infirmière bretonne pendant sa convalescence en 1945. Mes oncles maternels sont des proches d'Edouard Leclerc, ce qui m'a permis de trouver auprès de l'épicier, mais surtout de ses fournisseurs des soutiens pour ma carrière automobile. Il parait que je sais bien me débrouiller pour mettre mes sponsors en valeur. En tout cas, je passe beaucoup de temps à promener mes voitures dans leurs usines leurs magasins et à soutenir leurs actions de communication. Depuis on m'a beaucoup imité, mais à l'époque, les rupins qui squattaient le sport auto tordaient le nez...

Bref, quand je me pointe au Nurburgring, c'est sans illusions sur mes talents ni ma bagnole. Je place surtout des potes aux endroits où on pourra faire des belles photos, à envoyer aux sponsors. Et je m'applique à rester sur la piste assez longtemps pour qu'ils puissent me mettre en boite !

Heureusement, il fait beau aux essais. Y a un de ces peuples dans les stands ! 39 bourrins en tout ! Les gros bras habituels, plus une bande de belges sortis du rallye, une japonaise sur une béhème de F2 et même la vedette absolue : Michel Vaillant qui revient enfin à la F1 flanqué de son acolyte, l'inénarrable Warson. Plus quelques teutons sur tout ce qu'ils ont pu trouver en état de rouler, enfin je te raconte pas, regarde la liste des engagés tu verras, c'est marrant.

The usual big arm, plus a Belgian band out of the rally, a Japanese on a F2 BMW and even the absolute star: Michel Vaillant who finally returns to F1 flanked by his sidekick, the hilarious Warson. Plus some Teutonic on anything they could find roadworthy, well I not tell you, look you'll see the list of entrants, it's funny.

Je suis seizième sur 39 aux essais, c'est pas si mal? Voire! me retrouver derrière Yvette Fontaine et sa Lotus de F2 c'est pas glorieux ! La brunette la joue modeste. "Bah, c'est pas plus dur à apprendre qu'une spéciale de rallye, j'ai su me rémémorer le circuit en 3 passages et j'ai juste attaqué une fois au quatrième". Bon, je suis quand même devant des cadors comme McLaren ou Bondurant.

La grille a quand même de la gueule devant. C'est Hill qui a fait la pole sur sa Lotus, devant la Vaillante de Warson et la Matra-Cosworth de Stewart. En deuxième ligne Mennella, Vaillant et Hulme, puis Philippe Nicolas devant l'incroyable Moser et Ickx.

Il pleut des cordes pendant toute la course. Je vais batailler au coeur du peloton jusqu'au 9ème tour ou le vieux bandit batave Georges Joncker va me chercher des poux dans la tête en m'attaquant à l'abordage dans Pflanzgarten ! Tu parles que je regardais pas mes rétros ! Déja assez dur de regarder devant dans ce rideau de pluie !

Moralité, sa Cooper reste plantée là, mais ma Brabham commence à louvoyer... Je m'arrête aux stands pour voir ce qui se passe. Punaise de sort ! suspension arrière pliée... Je laisse tomber. Et regarde la fin de la course du stand Wookey, juste a coté, avec la jolie Régine, la copine de Philippe Nicolas.

Elle me raconte qu'en début de course un groupe s'est formé avec Hill, Stewart, Hulme, les Vaillante et les Wookey. Mais Warson n'a même pas bouclé un tour et Vaillant s'est mis à crachoter au second puis s'est arrêté. Philippe, son jules, s'est arrêté au tour précédent moteur cassé à Klostertal. Il va pas se taper les 10 bornes à pied pour revenir sous ce déluge, on le reverra après la course.

Tous les espoirs des marseillais se sont reportés sur Bob, qui navigue derrière le groupe de tête et tient tête à Rindt et aux Ferrari qui reviennent a toute berzingue derrière. Manque de bol il s'accroche avec Amon a 3 tours de l'arrivée à la sortie du stadium et revient à pied assister à la victoire de Stewart. Graham Hill a fini par céder, et se contente de contrôler Rindt et Ickx jusqu'au bout. Brabham, qu'on n'a pas vu de la course, ni de la saison, d'ailleurs, nous rappelle qu'il reste un très grand pilote en rentrant dans les points et Rodriguez accroche le dernier accessit après avoir fait une course spectaculaire mais sans erreurs.

Morality, its Cooper remains standing there, but my Brabham began to squeeze ... I stop in the pits to see what happens. bug out! bent rear suspension ... I drop. And look at the end of the race from Wookey's stand just next door, with Régine, the pretty Philippe Nicolas's girlfriend.

She tells me that race start a band formed with Hill, Stewart, Hulme, the Valiants and Wookeys. But Warson has not even completed a lap and Vaillant began to sputter in the second and then stopped. Philip, her mate, stopped the engine broke the previous round in Klostertal. He will not enter the 10km on foot to return under the deluge, we'll see him again after the race.

All hopes of Marseille based team were carried over Bob, who sails behind the leading group and stands up to Rindt and Ferrari returning a top speed behind. No luck he clings with Amon 3 laps just outside the stadium and back on foot to attend the victory of Stewart. Graham Hill relented and simply control Ickx and Rindt through. Brabham, we have not seen the race, nor of the season, however, reminds us that there is a great driver, returning to the points and Rodriguez catches the last runner-up after a spectacular race but without mistakes.

Ford Belgium entered 2 Lotus-Ford Formulae 2 for rallye pilots Yvette Fontaine and Marc Hogenkamp, winners of a national trophy.
A third Belgian, Paul Wurtz, borrowed an ex-Bonnier Cooper T81 with honorable results.
Miss Katsumoto, first Japanese female pilot, entered her F2 Lola BMW and achieved to end the race in the winner's lap (see race pictures)

Entre les Grand Prix d'Allemagne et d'Italie, une course hors Championnat se tient à Oulton Park, la traditionnelle Gold Cup.
Plusieurs équipes d'usine la snobent, mais Ferrari vient en force, ainsi que beaucoup d'écuries privées, ravies de l'aubaine.

C'est justement la période où je commence à préparer la saison prochaine. Je passe donc dans les ateliers DSC, chez Nicolas Cole, qui fait une trés honorable saison de F2 et lui fait, sur les conseils de Marcel, un petit schéma des modifications que je souhaite sur ma Wookey pour 1969.



Je prévois aussi une discussion serrée avec Citroën et Maserati sur le moteur. Le V12 Tipo 12 est certes fiable et performant, mais il est très lourd et son centre de gravité reste très haut. J'aimerais bénéficier d'un moteur plus  compact, comme celui des Matra. Je charge Henry Bondurand des négociations sur le plan technique, en tandem avec Jean-Claude Ogier.

Enfin, la crise de 68 étant passée, les accords de Grenelle ayant fait grimper le pouvoir d'achat des plus modestes, je pressens que je dois améliorer le marketing de mon entreprise pour toucher le plus large public. Je programme donc une nouvelle réunion avec Lucette et mon cousin Marc.

Enfin, ces rendez-vous pris, je me dirige vers Oulton Park où je prends part aux essais dans l'atmosphère typique du petit circuit anglais situé sur le terres du très distingué Duc de Sutherland propriétaire du chateau d'Oulton Hall.

On sent beaucoup de décontraction chez de nombreuses écuries, ce dont profite certains petits malins pour se distinguer aux essais.

Même Chris Lewis parvient à faire un temps remarquable sur la Lola qui a continué toute l'année à évoluer malgré des soucis évidents de mise au point de sa turbine.

La course est courte mais marquée de nombreux abandons. Stewart l'emporte devant Luigi Mennella, totalement déchainé et Chris Amon. Je parviens à la quatrième place sans trop forcer devant "Razor Ramon" Miguel et Pedro Rodriguez, les deux mexicains ayant roulé roues dans roues toute la course.

Hill longtemps leader a cassé sa boite de vitesse à mi-course et Oliver s'est arrêté ensuite sur ordre de Colin Chapman inquiet par la fumée qui s'échappait de sa voiture.

Even Chris Lewis manages to make a remarkable time on Lola continued to evolve throughout the year despite the obvious problems of development of the turbine.

The race is short but marked many dropouts. Stewart wins at Luigi Mennella, completely unbridled and Chris Amon. I reach the fourth place without forcing to "Razor Ramon" Miguel and Pedro Rodriguez, both Mexicans who drove wheel to wheel throughout the race.

Hill long leader broke his  gearbox halfway and then Oliver stopped on the orders of Colin Chapman worried by the smoke evading his car.

18 Aout 1968

Je revois Marc à Paris pendant mon retour d'Oulton. Il me montre le logo qu'il a travaillé avec Publicis, grâce au soutien efficace de Citroën. Un logo qui me va bien car il souligne la parenté de mon écurie avec Citroën, une marque que je vends aussi dans mon garage.
Pendant la même réunion, nous travaillons avec Marc et Lucette sur le sponsoring pour 1969. Caron est satisfait de l'impact de la campagne 1968 et souhaite renouveler. Dans les jours qui précédent Monza, l'attention se porte sur les préparatifs pour la saison 1969. Cela ressemble furieusement à une course au Cosworth. Le moteur soutenu par Ford s'impose comme la référence et de nombreuses équipes cherchent à se le procurer. J'apprends néanmmoins que Pierre cherche à pérenniser son deal avec Eagle-Weslake alors que Gurney, lui, préfererait se concentrer sur Indianapolis. De son coté, McLeod explore de mystérieuses pistes anglaises. Je n'arrive pas à lui soutirer l'info. Il y a aussi trois ingénieurs qui cherchent à imposer leurs projets.
- Len Terry, chez BRM, a travaillé sur un projet de voiture en forme d'aile. Mais Louis Stanley n'a pas l'air impressionné et Len Terry laisse fuiter le projet en espérant trouver asile dans une autre écurie.
- La même histoire semble se produire chez Cosworth où Robin Herd a travaillé sur une voiture à transmission intégrale mais Ford ne voit pas de synergies avec sa gamme commerciale.
- Chez Ferrari, c'est Pinin Farina qui a dessiné une F1 "du futur" la Sigma. Avec un accent mis sur la sécurité. Il s'agit plutôt d'un véhicule de démonstration pour forcer la main à la Commission Sportive Internationale. Enzo Ferrari a commandé cette étude dès 1967, choqué par l'accident de Bandini et l'hécatombe de pilotes de course depuis des années.
Aucun de ces projets ne semble susciter d'intérêt de la part des grandes équipes. Pas même celles au sein desquelles ils ont été conçus. Mais leurs promoteurs ne désespèrent pas.

En arrivant à Monza, je remarque que Luigi a profité de son Grand Prix National pour confier une troisième Lotus 58... à son frère Agostino. Plus connu pour ses talents de batteur de jazz que pour ses dons volants en main, Agostino Mennella se qualifie pourtant brillamment en pole position pour ses débuts en F1 ! De quoi faire oublier au public que Ferrari ne parvient pas à dominer sur son circuit national.

Lucien Bianchi devait faire débuter le moteur Alfa sur sa Cooper, mais la voiture souffre de défauts de jeunesse, et avec l'aide de son frère Mauro, il monte le moteur à la place du vieux Ford de la Wookey franco-belge qu'il qualifie en fin de grille.

Pour le reste, les essais démontrent une nouvelle fois la qualité des équipes Matra, Lotus et McLaren. BRM et Brabham sont dans les choux et 32 voitures s'élancent sevant une foule de tifosis déchainés.

Hill et Stewart complètent la première ligne,  je partage la seconde avec Hulme, suivi de Luigi Mennella, Ickx, McLeod, Pierre Scheller et toute la troupe...

Au départ, l'inexpérience d'Agostino Mennella se révèle et Hil prend le large devant Stewart, Hulme et Luigi. Très vite, Luigi passe Hulme à Lesmo et se rapproche du duo de tête. Quelques tours plus tard, Hill part en vrille en essayant de fermer la porte à Stewart. La Matra s'échape, Luigi part à ses trousses, pendant qu'un certain nombre de voitures dépassent, avec moi, la Lotus.

Derrière, Miguel, pardon "Razor Ramon" fait une course slendide et remonte ses adversaires un à un pour venir menacer Jacky Ickx qui me suit. Il finira par le passer et terminera quatrième. Son meilleur résultat.

Loin devant moi, Luigi est revenu sur Stewart et lui fait l'interieur à la parabolique ! Une victoire splendide qui le console largement d'une saison en demi teinte et fait le bonheur des tifosis, et même de Colin CHapman, frustré par la course de Hill dot la Lotus rallie l'arrivée avec un seul petit point.

Lucien Bianchi had to start the engine on his Alfa Cooper, but the car is suffering from teething problems, and with the help of his brother Mauro, he mounts the engine in place of the old Ford on the Belgian-French Wookey ; it qualifies end grid.

For the rest, the practice again demonstrate the quality of the teams Matra, Lotus and McLaren. BRM and Brabham are in cabbage and 32 cars soar a crowd of rampaging tifosi.

Hill and Stewart round out the first line, I share the second with Hulme, followed by Luigi Mennella, Ickx, McLeod, Pierre Scheller and the whole troop ...

Initially, the inexperience of Agostino Mennella reveals and Hill takes off before Stewart, Hulme and Luigi. Soon, Luigi passes Hulme in Lesmo and approaches the leading duo. A few laps later, Hill entered a spin trying to close the door to Stewart. Then, the Matra escapes, Luigi hand on his heels, while a number of cars passed, with me, the Lotus.

Behind Miguel err... sorry, "Razor Ramon" made a splendid running back and passed his opponents one by one then come to threaten Jacky Ickx following me. It will eventually pass and finish fourth. His best result.

Far ahead of me, Luigi returned to Stewart and pass him from inside at the parabolica! A splendid victory that concole him from the season in half shade and is a delight for tifosi, and even Colin Chapman, frustrated by the race of Hill whose Lotus rallied arrival with a single point.

L'erreur de Hill lui coute la première place du championnat. Il reste les 3 courses américaines à courir et je suis de nouveau en tête. Pourtant les bookmakers ne sont pas dpes et donnent encore l'élégant pilote anglas légèrement favori pour le titre.

The Hill error cost him the first place in the championship. It remains the 3 American races to go and I'm back in the lead. Yet the bookmakers are not fooled and still give the elegant English driver slight favorite for the title.
