Dans la seconde manche on retrouve 21 Formule A, propulsées par de gros moteurs de 5.0l stock block, et 3 F1 d'occasion.
Ayant été éliminé de la grande course, je n'ai plus rien à faire sur le circuit et je n'y assiste pas, je saute dans le premier avion et je rejoins le mariage de mon ami Pierre Sheller. Bob me racontera plus tard.
-"Ce circuit, c'est un peu mon jardin. et Haas m'a mitonné une Lola aux petits oignons. Alors j'avais pris la pole de ma catégorie aux essais devant Byers et Unser.
Nous sommes partis tous les 3 devant et on ne nous a pas revus. Oh my God ! Quelle empoignade ! Je suis certain que le public a apprécié ! Finalement, j'ai réussi à reprendre la tête et à gagner. I was so happy !"

C'est sous la forme de gros titres dans les journaux, que je pris connaissance dans l'avion des résultats de la Course. Régine et moi avions décidé de nous couper du Monde à l'occasion du mariage de Pierre et Anne-Marie et j'ai attendu qu'elle s'endorme dans l'avion du retour pour prendre connaissance des détails.
Au baisser du drapeau, Siffert avait pris le large avec Warson, Stewart et Amon. Derrière, la poursuite était menée par la Lotus de George Follmer et la McLaren de Pilette, puis Bondurant, Fitch, Cramer et les autres.
Petit à petit, Pilette prenait la tête de ce groupe et comblait son avance sur les F1 de tête. A ce stade, seul Follmer s'accrochait derrière lui. Le duo finit par revenir et avaler le quatuor de tête. omment? Pourquoi? Dans l'avion je restais sur ma faim. Ce n'est qu'en rentrant au garage que j'eu le fin mot de l'histoire.
La température avait soudain monté pendant la course, et les pneus des F1, ainsi que leurs freins avaient beaucoup souffert. Calibrés pour des F5000 nettement plus lourdes, les même éléments avaient mieux tenu le coup, du moins chez le prudent Follmer et la petite équipe belge. Les Lola n'avaient pas eu le même rendement, hélas pour mon ami Bob.
Le bilan de cette course en trois parties fut un regain inattendu de popularité de la Formule 5000 jusqu'en Europe, mais aussi en Autstralie et en Afrique du Sud. Bien moins chère qu'une F1 et capable de rivaliser avec, la catégorie avait de quoi séduire. La suite ne sera pas toujours aussi brillante pour les gros 5 litres américains.

It's in the form of headlines in the newspapers, that I became acquainted with the results of the race on the plane. Régine and I had decided to cut ourselves off from the world on the occasion of Pierre and Anne-Marie's wedding and I waited for her to fall asleep on the plane back to get the details.
At the flag, Siffert had taken off with Warson, Stewart and Amon. Behind, the pursuit was led by George Follmer's Lotus and Pilette's McLaren, then Bondurant, Fitch, Cramer, and others.
Gradually, Pilette took the lead of this group and filled his lead over F1. At this point, only Follmer clung behind him. The duo eventually come back and swallow the top quartet. How? Why? In the plane I remained on my hunger. It was not until I returned to the garage that I had the last word in the story.
The temperature had suddenly risen during the race, and the F1 tires and their brakes had suffered a lot. Calibrated for much heavier F5000s, the same elements had held up better, at least in the cautious Follmer and the small Belgian team. The Lola did not have the same performance, alas for my friend Bob.
The result of this three-part race was an unexpected upsurge in popularity of the Formula 5000 to Europe, but also in Australia and South Africa. Much less expensive than an F1 and able to compete with, the category had something to seduce. The following will not always be so brilliant for the big 5 liters American.

La célébrité grandissante de Jackie Stewart avait attisé encore plus l’intérêt du public britannique pour les courses automobiles et, conjuguée aux voitures disponibles pour des privés fouries notamment par March, rendant les courses Grand Prix abordables pour les indépendants, cela avait entraîné une augmentation des courses hors championnat en Grande-Bretagne. Les fabricants de cigarettes Rothmans et le journal Daily Express ont fait appel à Oulton Park pour organiser ce Spring Trophy (à ne pas confondre avec la réunion unique de la Spring Cup organisée par l'Express en 1967).

Contrairement à la course traditionnelle de la Gold Cup à Oulton Park, le trophée de printemps était réservé aux voitures de Formule 1 attirant 26 Engagés. BRM a envoyé la même équipe de trois voitures vue en Ontario - Pedro Rodríguez dans les seuls modèles P160 et plus anciens P153 pour Jo Siffert et Howden Ganley. John Surtees était dans sa voiture de 1971, tandis que Peter Gethin était dans la McLaren de 1970; la nouvelle voiture avait été engagée pour Denny Hulme. Lotus a engagé trois pilotes dans trois modèles différents: Emerson Fittipaldi est revenu à la 72C, Reine Wisell a pris le siège de la voiture à turbine 56B et Tony Trimmer se voit offrir une chance dans l'ancienne 49C. Pendant ce temps, les deux Tyrrell étaient présents pour Jackie Stewart et François Cevert.

Le 711 de Frank Williams était toujours en réparation après son «accident américain», mais il avait loué sa 701 à Cyd Williams, un coureur de la Formule 3 (non apparenté). Des voitures similaires ont été inscrites pour Mike Beuttler et Alan Rollinson (engagé par Siffert). Ronnie Peterson représente l'usine March sur une 711 et Joakim Bonnier a amené sa vieille McLaren.
On revoit la Brabham du vauclusien Jean Christophe. Encore une fois, je n'amène qu'une seule voiture pour l'écurie Wookey. Pierre Sheller, le jeune marié fait de même pour Vulkan, par contre McLeod est de retour auprès de luigi Mennella chez SCS. Dave Criblez poursuit son apprentissage. Enfin, les russes sont de retour avec la Khadi.



Qualifié en seconde ligne je ne prends pas un très bon départ et me retrouve englué. En tentant de remonter je vais commettre deux sorties de route, totalement de ma faute qui vont me condamner à faire de la figuration, malgré un record du tour. Loin devant, les BRM et Stewart vont animer la courses jusqu'à l'abandon de l'écossais sur bris de suspension. Cevert qui avait observé le combat à distance ne pourra pas su^^léer son leader et se contente de la plus petite marche du podium devant Peterson et un Riccardo Priori en grande forme.

Jackie Stewart's growing celebrity had further fueled the British public's interest in auto racing and, combined with the cars available for private vehicles such as March, making the Grand Prix races affordable for independents, this had led to an increase in off-championship races in Great Britain. Rothmans cigarette manufacturers and the Daily Express newspaper appealed to Oulton Park to organize the Spring Trophy (not to be confused with the unique Spring Cup meeting organized by the Express in 1967).

Unlike the traditional Gold Cup race at Oulton Park, the spring trophy was reserved for Formula 1 cars attracting 26 Engaged. BRM sent the same team of three cars seen in Ontario - Pedro Rodríguez in the only P160 models and older P153 for Jo Siffert and Howden Ganley. John Surtees was in his 1971 car, while Peter Gethin was in the McLaren from 1970; the new car had been engaged for Denny Hulme. Lotus hired three drivers in three different models: Emerson Fittipaldi returned to the 72C, Queen Wisell took the seat of the 56B turbine car and Tony Trimmer was offered a chance in the old 49C. Meanwhile, both Tyrrell were present for Jackie Stewart and Francois Cevert.

Frank Williams' 711 was still under repair after his "American crash", but he had rented his 701 to Cyd Williams, a Formula 3 (unrelated) rider. Similar cars have been registered for Mike Beuttler and Alan Rollinson (hired by Siffert). Ronnie Peterson represents the March factory on a 711 and Joakim Bonnier brought his old McLaren.
We see the Brabham Vaucluse Jean Christophe. Once again, I bring only one car to the Wookey stable. Pierre Sheller, the young groom, does the same for Vulkan, but McLeod is back with Luigi Mennella at SCS. Dave Criblez continues his apprenticeship. Finally, the Russians are back with the Khadi.

Qualified on the second line I do not take a very good start and find myself stuck. Trying to go up I will commit two road trips, totally my fault that will condemn me to do the figuration, despite a lap record. Far ahead, the BRM and Stewart will animate the race until the abandonment of the Scots on break suspension. Cevert, who had watched the fight from a distance, could not keep up with his leader and was content with the smallest step of the podium in front of Peterson and Riccardo Priori in great form.

Le Grand Prix d'Espagne revient sur le circuit montagneux catalan du parc de Montjuïc pour la deuxième fois. Malgré l'accident de Rindt en 1969, causé en partie par le revêtement inégal de la piste, beaucoup de pilotes et de suiveurs le préfèrent à Jarama, plus moderne et plus lent.

Plateau

Après les destinations exotiques et les courses hors championnat du début de saison, un plateau à peu près complet se présente à Barcelone. Lotus aligne deux modèles 72C pour Emerson Fittipaldi et Reine Wisell, la voiture à turbine manquant toujours beaucoup de performances. Mario Andretti, libre de tout engagement de la part de l'USAC est donc présent chez Ferrari aux côtés de Jacky Ickx et de Clay Regazzoni. Tous trois sur des B1, la B2 n'étant pas au point. Le Flat 12 italien a cependant vu son régime moteur augmenter. Il avoisine désormais les 470 chevaux à 12 500 tours/minute. Brabham fournit une BT34 pour Graham Hill, avec Tim Schenken toujours dans la voiture de 1970. Une situation similaire persiste chez McLaren, où Denny Hulme a le dernier modèle M19 et Peter Gethin une vieille M14. Entre-temps, Tyrrell a fait construire trois de ses voitures et n'a plus besoin des vieilles March 701. Jackie Stewart s'installe au volant de la 003, une évolution allégée de la 001. Celle-ci est toujours utilisée en tant que voiture de réserve. Le nouveau modèle possède une nouvelle boîte à air tandis que le museau, les ailerons et l'empattement ont été modifiés. De son côté François Cevert dispose toujours de la 002.

BRM possède deux voitures P160 pour Pedro Rodriguez et Jo Siffert, bien que le troisième pilote d'usine Howden Ganley ait toujours la plus ancienne P153. C'est en effet le Suisse Dave Criblez qui a acheté la troisième P160 et l'aligne sous ses propres couleurs. March propose un trio de 711 pour Ronnie Peterson, le héros local Alex Soler-Roig et Andrea de Adamich, soutenu par une machine similaire pour Frank Williams et aux mains d'Henri Pescarolo. Matra a quant à lui retrouvé deux pilotes puisque Jean-Pierre Beltoise a rejoint Chris Amon, le permis du Français ayant été restitué après avoir été innocenté du fatal accident du 1000 km de Buenos Aires avec Ignazio Giunti.
Matra aborde cette course avec son ancien modèle. En revanche le V12 français étrenne des bielles en acier à la place de bielles en titane. De plus, sur la voiture de Beltoise, les injecteurs sont désormais placés sous la guillotine, à contre-courant de l'injection.

Enfin, John Surtees sort de son camion deux TS9 pour lui-même et Rolf Stommelen. Et une TS7 peinte en Orange qu'il livre à Hans Hulsebos, qui s'empresse de lui coller les stickers de son sponsor : Honig.



Je retrouve à mes cotés Jean-Pierre Jaussaud, que j'ai choisi car il connaît déjà la piste pour y avoir tourné en F3 et F2. Chez Centro-Sud, McLeod revient auprès de Luigi. Vaillante, Koruto, Bellasi, Vulkan sont là aussi, ainsi que la PZ de Bob Bondurant.

Et pour clore ce copieux menu, les russes de Khadi débarquent portant à 36 le nombre de voitures présentes. Nous aurions pu être 40 si Mike Beuttler et Pierre Bat avaient amené leurs March privées et si Bonnier et Christophe avait été au bout de leur intention de s'aligner. Mais la décision des organisateurs de rogner sur les primes d'engagement pour gonfler les prix au résultat avait découragé ces habitués des participations en fond de grille.

Firestone propose à ses clients un nouveau type de pneu appelé B25, dont la gomme est complétement lisse. C'est donc le premier véritable pneu « slick » de l'histoire de la F1, concurrençant le modèle présenté par Goodyear à Kyalami.

Parti comme une balle de la deuxième ligne, j'arrive en tête au premier gros freinage sous le nez de Siffert. Mais le Suisse ne me lâche pas. Dans la descente il me talonne. Et dans la montée, il me repasse. En essayant de le suivre je grille mon moteur. Adieu la Catalogne ! Je ne serai pas le seul à finir la course hors de mon siège. 10 voitures terminent seulement.

The Spanish Grand Prix returns to the Catalan mountain circuit of Montjuïc Park for the second time. Despite Rindt's accident in 1969, caused in part by the uneven surface of the track, many drivers and followers prefer it to Jarama, more modern and slower.

Tray

After the exotic destinations and off-season races at the beginning of the season, there is an almost complete plateau in Barcelona. Lotus aligns two 72C models for Emerson Fittipaldi and Reine Wisell, the turbine car still lacking a lot of performance. Mario Andretti, free of any commitment from the USAC is therefore present at Ferrari alongside Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni. All three on B1, the B2 is not developed. The Italian Flat 12, however, saw its engine speed increase. It is now around 470 horses at 12,500 revolutions / minute. Brabham supplies a BT34 for Graham Hill, with Tim Schenken still in the 1970 car. A similar situation persists at McLaren, where Denny Hulme has the latest M19 model and Peter Gethin an old M14. Meanwhile, Tyrrell has had three of his cars built and no longer needs the old March 701. Jackie Stewart moves to the 003, a lighter evolution of the 001. This is still used as a reserve car. The new model has a new airbox while the muzzle, fins and wheelbase have been modified. For his part François Cevert still has the 002.

BRM owns two P160 cars for Pedro Rodriguez and Jo Siffert, although the third factory driver Howden Ganley still has the oldest P153. It is indeed the Swiss Dave Criblez who bought the third P160 and aligns it with his own colors. March features a trio of 711s for Ronnie Peterson, local hero Alex Soler-Roig and Andrea de Adamich, backed by a similar machine for Frank Williams and at the hands of Henri Pescarolo. Matra has found two drivers since Jean-Pierre Beltoise has joined Chris Amon, the license of the French having been returned after being cleared of the fatal accident of the 1000 km of Buenos Aires with Ignazio Giunti.
Matra approaches this race with her old model. On the other hand the French V12 reveals steel connecting rods in place of titanium rods. In addition, on the Beltoise car, the injectors are now placed under the guillotine, against the current of the injection.
Finally, John Surtees had two of the TS9 cars for himself and Rolf Stommelen.

I found Jean-Pierre Jaussaud, whom I chose because he already knows the track for shooting in F3 and F2. At Centro-South, McLeod returns to Luigi. Valiant, Koruto, Bellasi, Vulkan are there too, as well as Bob Bondurant's PZ.

And to close this rich menu, the Russians of Khadi landed bringing to 36 the number of cars present. We could have been 40 if Mike Beuttler and Pierre Bat had brought their private March and if Bonnier and Christophe had been at the end of their intention to line up. But the decision of the organizers to trim on the commitment premiums to inflate prices to the result had discouraged those regulars in the bottom grid.

Firestone offers its customers a new type of tire called B25, whose rubber is completely smooth. This is the first true slick tire in the history of F1, competing with the model presented by Goodyear at Kyalami.


Starting as a bullet from the second line, I come first in the first big braking under the nose of Siffert. But the Swiss do not let me go. In the descent he hounds me. L'International Trophy du BRDC est la dernière course hors championnat avant la reprise du programme par les manches européennes estivales du championnat. Pour pimenter le spectacle, l'épreuve est également ouverte aux voitures de Formule 5000, qui font partie du championnat européen sponsorisé par Rothmans. Le sponsoring à long terme du quotidien Daily Express a été renforcé par le soutien du géant industriel GKN.

Bien que se courre, le même jour, la course de voitures de sport des 1000 km de Spa, la course attire tout de même un plateau copieux. La dernière voiture de Tyrrell est destinée à Jackie Stewart, tandis que Lotus présente encore la 56B à turbine pour Emerson Fittipaldi dans l’espoir que le circuit rapide convienne à la voiture; Reine Wisell est restée avec la 72. Brabham se présente comme en Espagne, avec Graham Hill dans le BT34 et Tim Schenken prenant l'ancien BT33. Jean Christophe est de retour avec sa BT33 financée par les vignobles de Chateauneuf du Pape. Carlos Reutemann insiste avec sa vieille BT26 dont il assure lui-même le développement et qui étonne à chaque sortie. BRM est également en version standard bien que Pedro Rodríguez et Jo Siffert soient tous les deux transportés en Belgique par avion tout le week-end afin de remplir leurs contrats avec l’équipe Porsche-Gulf de John Wyer; Howden Ganley échappe quant à lui à cette distraction mais se contente d'une P153 contrairement à Dave Criblez dont les sponsors personnels lui permettent de présenter sa récente P160.  Matra aligne également ses voitures habituelles pour Chris Amon et Jean-Pierre Beltoise tandis qu'Henri Pescarolo peut utiliser la March 711 de Frank Williams, laissant la 701 à Derek Bell. Mike Beuttler lui aussi présente une March 701, financée par un groupe d'amis banquiers sur laquelle il a placé un charmant message à l'égard de sa fiancée. Est-ce pour dissiper de méchantes rumeurs sur sa vie privée? Une autre 701 jaune est présente, aux mains du belge Pierre Bat

Denny Hulme retenu par des essais pour l'Indianapolis 500, Peter Gethin est donc l'unique représentant de McLaren dans la vieille M14A. Il y a aussi des changements chez Surtees et March; car Rolf Stommelen étant à Spa, c’est donc Alan Rollinson qui a rejoint John Surtees. Une TS7 est aussi alignée par Hans Hulsebos. Dans l'écurie de Bicester, Nanni Galli était initialement engagé dans la voiture à moteur Alfa Romeo alors qu'Andrea de Adamich était à Spa au volant du T33 / 3 de l'Autodelta, mais il souffrant. Ronnie Peterson a donc choisi d'essayer la machine à moteur italien. Ferrari qui avait inscrit Jacky Ickx et de Clay Regazzoni (Mario Andretti étant naturellement à Indianapolis), s'est retiré à la dernière minute. Vulkan, dont les numéros fétiches étaient réservés à des F5000, récupère donc les numéros de course 9 et 10 prévus pour les italiens. Chez Koruto on espère enrayer la série noire des casse moteurs, et la jolie Mlle Katsumoto a obtenu que Honda délègue une équipe d'ingénieurs maison pour y veiller. Vaillante a délégué à Spa une équipe bis autour d'Yves Douléac et aligne donc son duo de choc Vaillant-Warson. SCS est également au complet avec Luigi Mennella et Conrad McLeod et on revoit aussi une nouvelle fois les russes de Khadi. Riccardo Priori parvient à aligner sa Bellasi, qui surprend par ses performances pour un budget apparemment limité.

Quant à moi, je me présente cette fois flanqué du très talentueux Christian Ethuin, qui doit s'acclimater à la voiture car je l'ai engagé, à la demande de Total pour les deux Grand Prix suivants. Et je revois avec plaisir ma voiture de l'an dernier aux mains de mon ami Nicholas Cole.

La section Formule 5000 a fourni un bon nombre des coureurs habituels du championnat: Mike Hailwood dans les travaux Surtees et Tony Lafranchi dans un modèle plus ancien; McLaren-Chevrolet de différents types pilotés par Gordon Spice, Brian Redman, Tony Dean (qui possédait une ancienne F1 M7A équipée du moteur standard de 5 litres), John Myerscough, David Prophet, Ray Allen, l'ancien protégé de Joakim Bonnier, Ulf Norinder, et le pilote Francais de Formule Deux, Jean-Pierre Jaussaud; Frank Gardner dans sa Lola T192, Mike Walker sa voiture similaire et Robs Lamplough dans sa T100 modifiée; La Lotus 70 à moteur Ford de Jock Russell; Trevor Taylor dans le Leda; la Crosslé à moteur Rover de Fred Saunders et Bob Miller dans la Dulon. On revoit aussi le Team VDS qui aligne Teddy Pilette sur McLaren.

The Entrants
The BRDC International Trophy is the last non-championship race before the resumption of the program by the European summer rounds of the championship. To spice up the show, the event is also open to Formula 5000 cars, which are part of the European championship sponsored by Rothmans. The long-term sponsorship of the Daily Express has been reinforced by the support of the industrial giant GKN.

Although the same day, the sports car race 1000 km of Spa runs, the race still attracts a hearty plateau. Tyrrell's latest car is destined for Jackie Stewart, while Lotus is still presenting the 56B turbine for Emerson Fittipaldi in the hope that the fast track fits the car; Queen Wisell remained with the 72. Carlos Reutemann insists with his old BT26 which he himself ensures the development and which amazes each exit. BRM is also standard although Pedro Rodríguez and Jo Siffert are both flown to Belgium all weekend to fulfill their contracts with John Wyer's Porsche-Gulf team; Howden Ganley escapes this distraction but is content with a P153 unlike Dave Criblez whose personal sponsors allow him to present his recent P160. Matra also aligns her usual cars for Chris Amon and Jean-Pierre Beltoise while Henri Pescarolo can use Frank Williams' March 711, leaving the 701 to Derek Bell. Denny Hulme retained by trials for the Indianapolis 500, Peter Gethin is the only representative of McLaren in the old M14A. There are also changes in Surtees and March; Because Rolf Stommelen is at Spa, so Alan Rollinson joined John Surtees. A TS7 is also aligned by Hans Hulsebos. In the Bicester team, Nanni Galli was initially engaged in the Alfa Romeo motor car while Andrea de Adamich was at Spa driving the T33 / 3 of the Autodelta, but he was suffering. As for me, I present myself this time flanked by the very talented Christian Ethuin, who has to acclimatize to the car because I hired him, at the request of Total for the following two Grand Prix. And I'm looking forward to seeing my car from last year at the hands of my friend Nicholas Cole.

Débordés par le succès, les organisateurs négocient avec les participants et les sponsors. Le programme initial prévoyait une course en deux manches de 26 tours. Finalement, toutes les voitures feront bien cette distance, mais un ingénieux système permettra aux spectateurs de voir 4 courses en tout. En effet, le samedi, deux demi-finales qualifieront chacune 13 voitures pour la finale et 13 autres pour la course de classement du Dimanche. Une course de classement qui servira à compléter la distribution des points pour le championnat européen de F5000 auquel participent 16 des inscrits et qui trouve ici sa cinquième manche. Pour inciter les F1 à jouer le jeu, cette manche "de consolation" sera elle aussi richement dotée par Rothmans, le cigarettier qui soutient la F5000.
Le samedi matin, les voitures seront lancées toutes les 30 secondes pour une série de 5 tours chronométrés qualificatifs, afin que chacun bénéficie d'un tour clair tout en respectant le timing serré.

Overwhelmed by success, organizers negotiate with participants and sponsors. The initial program included a race in two rounds of 26 laps. 1ère Manche

La moitié du plateau s'élance donc pour la première manche. Chacun a deux objectifs : terminer dans les 13 premiers pour se qualifier, et réaliser un bon temps sur un tour, car ce sont ces temps là qui seront utilisés pour établir les grilles de départ des finales.
A ce jeu, je décide de partir prudemment, et je me mets à attaquer sérieusement quand mes pneus sont chauds et encore en bon état et que ma voiture s'est allégée.
Alors que je suis en 4ème position derrière Siffert, Jaussaud et Gardner, je réussis une superbe sortie de route, heureusement sans rien toucher. En voulant m'éviter, le pauvre Chris Amon n'a pas de chance et finit dans le rail. Je rallie tout de même l'arrivée en 8ème position et me qualifie.

Nicholas Cole et Taka Katsumoto n'ont pas cette chance et abandonnent, moteur explosé. Beaucoup de concurrents ont souffert de problèmes de frein. Fittipaldi, surtout dont la turbine n'a pas d'effet de frein moteur, mais aussi Dave Criblez ou Pierre Scheller. Luigi Mennella, quant à lui a eu des soucis electriques.
Ils auront une nouvelle chance dans la finale de consolation !

Half of the board therefore starts for the first run. Each has two goals: to finish in the top 13 to qualify, and to have a good time on a lap, because these are the times that will be used to establish the starting grid for the finals.
At this game, I decide to leave carefully, and I start to attack seriously when my tires are hot and still in good condition and my car has been lightened.
While I am in 4th position behind Siffert, Jaussaud and Gardner, I manage a superb road exit, fortunately without touching anything. In wanting to avoid me, poor Chris Amon has no luck and ends up in the rail. I still join the finish in 8th position and qualify.

Nicholas Cole and Taka Katsumoto are not so lucky and give up, engine exploded. Many competitors have suffered brake problems. Fittipaldi, especially whose turbine has no effect of engine braking, but also Dave Criblez or Pierre Scheller. Luigi Mennella, meanwhile, had some electrical problems.
They will have another chance in the consolation final!

En revenant à mon stand, je croise Denis Briot, un jeune pilote azuréen que j'ai déjà croisé sur quelques courses mineures dans le Sud de la France. Il m'attrape par le bras et m'entraîne vers le stand Lotus.
-" J'ai une surprise pour toi ! J'aurais aimé qu'elle soit prête pour aujourd'hui, mais elle était gardée en réserve pour Fittipaldi si sa 56 n'avait pas fonctionné.
Et il soulève un coin de bâche, sous laquelle trône une 72 joliment repeinte en bleu.
- "Maintenant que Fitti a couru sur la 56, je peux enfin coller mes stickers. Tu m'aides?"
- "Vite fait, je veux aller voir Christian Ethuin courir le deuxième manche".
En quelques minutes, la Lotus prend les couleurs du "Denis Briot Racing" le diable d'homme avait tout prévu au centimètre près, chaque autocollant se place en quelques secondes... Et voilà le résultat !

Returning to my stand, I meet Denis Briot, a young Riviera pilot whom I have already met on some minor races in the South of France. He catches me by the arm and trains me to the Lotus booth.
- "I have a surprise for you! I wish it were ready for today, but it was kept in reserve for Fittipaldi if 56 had not worked.
And he raises a corner of tarpaulin, under which sits a beautifully painted blue.

- "Now that Fitti has run on the 56, I can finally stick my stickers, you help me?"
- "Quickly so, I want to go to see Christian Ethuin run the second round."
In a few minutes, the Lotus takes the colors of "Denis Briot Racing" the devil had planned everything to the centimeter, each sticker is placed in seconds ... And here is the result!

Pour la deuxième manche, la Leda et la Dulon ne purent pas démarrer, leur place sur la grille fut donc attribuée aux pilotes de réserve.

La course était fortement disputée entre Stewart, Vaillant, Ethuin et Rodriguez.
Finalement, Rodriguez et Vaillant se retirent et Christian Ethuin se qualifie brillamment pour la première fois tandis que Stewart est satisfait de conduire sa voiture en toute sécurité à la deuxième place devant Beltoise, Dimitrov, Denis Briot et Hailwood.
Aussi qualifié:
Peterson, Riccardo Priori, McLeod, Bat, Spice, Reine Wisell et Surtees.
Malheureusement, Hans Hulsebos figurait parmi les non qualifiés, pour des problèmes de boîte de vitesses.

Eventually, Rodriguez and Vaillant withdrew and Christian Ethuin qualified brillantly first while Stewart was satisfied to drive his car safely home in second place in front of Beltoise, Dimitrov, Denis Briot and Hailwood.

Peterson, Riccardo Priori, McLeod, Bat, Spice, Reine Wisell and Surtees.
Unfortunately, Hans Hulsebos were amongst the non qualified, both for gearbox problems.
