Wookey F1 Challenge story only

Entre Jarama et Monaco, l'attention générale est focalisée sur les événements du Quartier Latin. Le lundi après Jarama, une grève générale se prolonge à la surprise générale. La France est paralysée. L'essence manque. Le tout dans une ambiance de kermesse estudiantine. Pendant que les politiques de tous bords se ridiculisent, je fais confiance à mon équipe pour préparer les voitures, et finalement, aucun concurrent n'est géné par tout ce tumulte.
Par contre, par souci de sécurité, l'Automobile Club de Monaco n'a invité que 22 voitures.

Personne ne comprends les critères retenus. On soupconne même qu'ils aient choisi de retenir Bonnier pour éviter de le voir prendre la tête d'une fronde. Peine perdue. Avec Stewart, qui pourtant ne peut courir, et Graham Hill, ils forment un triumvirat qui fait le tour des pilotes et des chefs d'écurie.
Il faut dire que déjà à l'époque, le GP de Monaco était particulèrement réputé et chacun voulair s'y montrer.
Comme la grogne monte, les organisateurs (sous la pression du Palais dit-on) annoncent in extremis une course de pré qualification le jeudi ! Du jamais vu ! Les pilotes s'élanceront le matin pour 3 tours chacun pour définir la grille, puis la course aura lieu sur 5 tours seulement. Les 4 premiers enchaineront directement sur la première s'ance d'essais officiels avec les 20 invités.

Le mardi avant la course, RMC annonce qu'elle diffusera la préqualif en direct et la propose en Eurovision. Du coup, chacun se précipite pour s'inscrire.
Finalement 14 voitures se présentent sur le circuit.

Jacky Ickx, laissé à pied par le forfait de Ferrari trouve refuge dans la Wookey des frères Bianchi. Lucien, d'abord pressenti ayant trouvé un volant d'usine chez Cooper !
Chris IRWIN, blessé et Bob BONDURANT, malade, laissent leur baquet au dernier moment. Brian Redman, et Chris Amon, l'autre Ferrariste les remplacent au pied levé. Amon n'avait même pas amené son casque et emprunte celui de l'Américain. Amon et Ickx sont du coup les grands favoris de cette préqualif.
Quant à Chris Lewis, il est tout sourire. Sa Lola n'a aucune chance de se qualifier mais il fait une double bonne opération. D'abord auprès de ses sponsors de STP, enchantés de participer à la fête pour la première fois, ensuite il engrange de l'expérience sur cette piste très particulière, pour continuer à développer le moteur à turbine. Il termine d'ailleurs les essais en 12ème place. Devançant Keith St-John et Tony Lanfranchi ses compatriotes venus au pied levé avec des voitures peu préparées.

La course de préqualifications est brève mais très intense. Ickx et Amon orennent la tête rapidement, mais Ickx touche le mur entre la sortie du tinnel et la chicane, laissant le kiwi s'envoler vers la victoire. Redman assure dans sa BRM. Courage et Nathy Wehbé restent aussi dans leur baquet. Dans quelques minutes, les essais officiels commencent. Les dix autres peuvent commencer à plier leurs bagages, le Grand Prix de Monaco est déjà terminé pour eux.

Le Samedi, rebelote. Ce n'est qu'en milieu de séance que nous trouvons enfin les bons réglages. A ce moment là, tout le monde est sur la piste et un vent marin pporte fraicheur et humidité. Impossible d'améliorer nos temps et nous partirons donc le dimanche du milieu de la grille. Par contre, Henry a trpuvé les réglages qui apportent toute la motricité indispensable sur ce circuit tourmenté et Marcel a trouvé le moyen de garder les freins à bonne température malgré le traitement de choc auquel les soumet les rues de la principauté. La confiance règne donc sur la ligne de départ.
La pole revient à Hill dont la Lotus 49 reprend l'arrière profilé des Lotus 28 de la Scuderia Centro Sud.

Au baisser du drapeau, pendant que loin devant moi Hill s'impose à Hulme dans le premier tour et s'envole vers une victoire indispensable, je m'applique surtout à passer Sainte Dévote et la montée vers le Casino sans toucher personne.
Ensuite je sens que ma voiture me permet toutes les audaces. Je commence à me faire la Honda de Surtees à Mirabeau et dans la foulée, je fais simplement l'extérieur de la BRM d'Attwood à la Gare ! Bien aidé je le reconnais par les Lotus de Luigi et Nathy qui semblent avoir du mal à cet endroit du circuit et ont ralenti l'anglais pendant ma manoeuvre.
Je passe ensuite Nathy aux gazomètres, puis Luigi, juste après à Sainte Dévote.
Le Citroen Maserati montre sa puissance au tour suivant dans la montée de Beau Rivage en me permettant de déborder Rindt.
Quelques tours plus tard, je me permets de doubler à la fois Oliver et Hulme au bureau de tabac. Je me sens en état de grâce.
Je reviens sur McLaren, et je m'en débarasse à Sainte Dévote.
Plus personne devant moi, je regarde enfin le panneau que me tend Marcel. Je suis troisième et Chris est loin devant moi. Pas la peine de faire le fou pour ratrapper mon coéquipier. Je m'applique juste à prendre du plaisir avec ma voiture parfaitement équilibrée, malgré mon poignet et mes chevilles qui fatiguent.
A l'arrivée, Je retrouve Chris Amon qui rend cérémonieusement son casque à Bob Bondurant. Il a fait mieux que l'interim, dommage qu'il retourne bientot chez Ferrari, mais je n'ai pas un programme sport prototype à lui proposer, moi...
Graham Hill reste grave. Cette première victoire garde un goût amer si peu de temps après l'accident de Jim Clark. Chapman sourit enfin. Mais les deux anglais sont moins exubérants qu'en pareil cas d'ordinaire. Ils se ratrapperont à la soirée princière, le champagne aidant, à tel point que la Princesse Grâce les déclarera désormais tricards au Palais pour quelque temps...

Au championnat, je suis désormais second, à un point de Hill

Bob fait semblant de se vexer :

Mais son oeil coquin dément son menton renfrogné.
Et en effet, à l'issue des essais le public éberlué voit Bob Bondurant prendre la 3ème place sur la grille. Maid cette performance est occultée par le temps quasi miraculeux de Gorge Joncker, qui ne cède la pole à Hill que d'un dixième.
- "Et alors?" répond le quadragénaire batave "Cette voiture a gagné l'an dernier, pourquoi elle serait moins compétitive cette année? C'est elle qui fait tout le boulot"
La version des écuries est différente, chacun compare ses chronos, et aucun n'est cohérent avec les temps officiels. La Cooper Orange et bleue a - t -elle bénéficié d'une défaillance du chronométrage officiel? On ne le saura jamais, mais la course nous en donnera une indication.
Quant à moi, je me retrouve cette fois en milieu de grille, a plus d'une seconde de Bob. Et je n'ai pas la moindre idée de la raison. Ca va être difficile de renouveler mon exploit de l'an dernier.
Je prends néanmoins le départ dimanche avec une grande décontraction. J'aime ce circuit, j'aime cette voiture, mon moteur sonne juste et le soleil brille haut. Alors... C'est parti !
Dans la cohue du départ je me place dans le sillage de Brabham. D'abord il est facile à repérer avec son curieux aileron à la Chaparal sur les roues arrières, et ensuite, quoi de mieux comme lièvre que le champion en titre?
Une fois que j'ai réussi à le doubler, je me raproche de Luigi et de Chris Amon.
Mes Michelin sont absolument géniaux en grande courbe, je suis collé à la route, même sans les disgracieux appendices dont se sont affublés Amon et Brabham. Je ne tarde pas à les dépasser et à revenir sur Beltoise.
Mon Citroën pousse t il plus que on Matra? Il faut le croire, je n'en fais qu'une bouchée.
Un temps, je suis coincé derrière McLaren, et Brabham en profite pour me repasser. Qu'est ce qu'il freine bien depuis qu'il à cet aileron ! A méditer.
Mais je reprends bientôt l'avantage et rejoins Stewart. A mi course je suis cinquième !
J'allège un peu la pression quelques tours, mais au dernier quart de la course, Henry me tend un panneau clair : GO !
Je fonds alors sur Hulme et Rindt et parvient dans le dernier tour à accrocher le podium derrière Hill second loin devant moi.
A aucun moment je n'ai compris qui était en tête. Mon Bob !
L'américain, décidémment bien guéri de ses ennuis de santé de Monaco a fait une course parfaite. Dans le sillage de Hill sans forcer. Puis quand il l'a décidé, il a débordé la Lotus et s'en est allé cuellir les lauriers de sa première victoire en F1.

Deux Wookey-Citroën-Maserati sur le podium ! Je n'ose vous raconter la fête qui a suivi. Elle fut mémorable et se déroula sur 4 pays, Belgique, France, Luxembourg et jusqu'en Allemagne, puisque nous finimes à 5 heures du matin dans une boîte de Trèves, ronds comme des queues de pelle et qu'il fallut qu'un de nos compagnons de bamboche décline nos identités et la raison de notre liesse à la Polizei pour qu'on nous évite la cellule de dégrisement.

It was memorable and was held on 4 countries, Belgium, France, Luxembourg and into Germany, since we finished at 5 am in Trier box, round like tails shovel and it took one of our fellow bamboche accept our identity and the reason for our joy at the Polizei for us that we avoid the drunk tank.

Dimanche 23 juin 1968

La variété des virages de Zandvoort et ses bonnes installations en font une piste d'essai populaire et avant que le week-end officiel du Grand Prix n'ait commencé, plusieurs équipes l'avaient déjà utilisé depuis la manche belge.

La plupart des équipes se retrouvent avec les mêmes pilotes et l'équipement de Spa - McLaren, Lotus, Brabham, Honda, Matra (à la fois l'équipe d'usine et l'unité semi-privée de Tyrrell), Ferrari, BRM, Tim Parnell, Joaikim Bonnier et Rob Walker tous étant inchangé. Silvio Moser rejoint le peloton comme Gurney mais, à court de moteurs Weslake, ce dernier s'est arrangé pour emprunter la voiture de secours du Team Brabham BT24. Autre changement chez Cooper, où Brian Redman avait été hospitalisé à la suite du Grand Prix de Belgique et Ludovico Scarfiotti avait été tué dans une course de côte allemande. Du coup, Lucien Bianchi reste dans la Cooper-BRM, bien que des plans étaient en cours pour une version du T86 avec un nouveau moteur de trois litres d'Alfa Romeo utilisé en Prototypes puisque Cosworth reste incapables de les fournir.
Son frère Mauro, toujours en quête d'argent, cède son baquet pour la course au local Toine Hezemans.

Comme en Belgique la pluie a géné la deuxième session, mais cette fois tout le monde avait réussi à placer un chronoi. Chris Amon a pris la pole devant Hill. je suis troisième devant Mennella et Bob Bondurant, puis Stewart et Oliver.

La Ferrari de Ickx arbore un aileron censé améliorer la tenue de route en virage. Mais sur le rapide toboggan des dunes, cela semble plus la freiner qu'autre chose, et il ne parvient pas à décrocher Hill dans les premiers tours. Au contraire, Hill finit par lui faire l'intérieur à Tarzan. Profitant de l'ouverture, je passe aussi ainsi que Bob.

Nous nous échapons tous les trois. Hill et moi échangeons plusieurs fois nos places en tête.

Voyant mes pneus se dégrader, je finis par lever le pied et laisser Bob mener la chasse derrière l'anglais. Mais nous finissons par le ratrapper au moment où il prend un tour à un gros groupe d'attardés.

Au moment ou Graham Hill pense s'etre enfin sorti d'affaire, son Cosworth éclate dans un énorme panache d'huile pulvérisée et Bob prend la tête. Mais il est à son tour victime de l'usure de ses pneus.

Ayant ménagé les miens, je reviens sur lui et dans les derniers tours il s'écarte sportivement pour m'offrir la deuxième victoire de ma carrière.

Loin derrière nous, Oliver parvient à monter sur le podium aux dépends de Jacky Ickx. Beltoise et Amon se partageant les derniers points.

Ickx's Ferrari sports a spoiler supposed to improve the behavior of curved road. But the rapid slide of the dunes, this seems the more brake than anything else, and it fails to clinch Hill in the early rounds. Instead, Hill finally make it inside to Tarzan. Taking advantage of the opening, I also spend as Bob.

We échapons all three. Hill several times and I exchange our places in mind.

Seeing my tires degrade, I finally ease off and let Bob lead the chase behind English. But we eventually catch up to him when he takes a turn to a large group of retarded.

When Graham Hill thinks will be finally out of the woods, his Cosworth explodes in a huge plume of oil sprayed and Bob takes the lead. But it is in turn victim of wear of his tires.

Having spared mine, I come back on him and in the last laps he departs sportingly offered me the second win of my career.

Far behind us, Oliver manages to reach the podium at the expense of Jacky Ickx. Amon Beltoise and sharing the last points.

Ce résultat inespéré et la bonne régularité de mon début de saison m'offrent la première place du championnat. La pression médiatique repart à son comble, comme après ma première victoire. Je ne joue pas les faux modestes en répondant que je sais que rien n'est fait. En performances pures, nous restons derrière les Lotus et il suffirait de peu de choses pour que Hill ne reprenne la tête. Sans compter que la menace Ferrari se précise.

7 juillet 1968 - Rouen-les-Essarts

Après ces deux doublés consécutifs, la presse française en fait encore des tonnes et nou met une pression incroyable. Heureusement, cette fois Lucette sert de filtre. Avec baucoup de tact, elle limite au strict minimum les sollicitations. Seuls Stéphane Collaro pour l'ORTF, Johnny Rives et Gérard Crombac ont droit à quelques minutes chacun.
C'st donc frais, dispos et concentré que je me présente dans la forêt des Essarts sur l'acrobatique et très rapide circuit de Rouen.
Pour notre Grand Prix National, Pas moins de 4  voitures sont alignés. Mauro Bianchi dispose de mon mulet à moteur Citroën-Maserati, tandis que son propre chassis à moteur Ford est encore prêté, cette fois à Pescarolo. Le barbu a été laissé libre par Matra, ainsi que Schlesser qui récupère la nouvelle Honda dont Surtees ne veut pas et Servoz-Gavin qui fait une pige chez Cooper aux cotés de Vic Elford. Lucien Bianchi, n'a pas trop insisté pour garder le volant d'une Cooper d'usine qui confirme mes craintes et justifie ma décision de faire construire mon propre engin.

Aux essais, ce sont encore les moteurs Cosworth qui confirment leur ascendant. Stewart arrache la pole à Hill pour un cheveu. Ickx s'intercale ensuite devant Mennella, l'incroyable Joncker, Wehbé et Pedro de la Bassetta. Quant à moi, je suis 8ème.

Je prends un bon départ et me retrouve pendant le début de course à me battre avec Stewart, Ickx et Hulme pour la deuxième place. Hill est parti devant, personne ne le reverra.

A Nouveau Monde j'essaie de faire l'intérieur à tout le groupe. Stewart insiste, nos roues se touchent.... et sa course se termine là. Par chance, je peux continuer et la lutte se pousuit avec la Ferrari et la McLaren.

Hélas au bout de quelques tours, une épaisse fumée s'échappe de mon Maserati et les espoirs du public sont probablement aussi douchés que les miens. Quel manque de chance pour mon grand prix national !

Quelques minutes plus tard, je me console avec la 4ème place de Bob, et la jolie 8ème place de Mauro Bianchi. Mais après les deux courses précédentes, c'est tout de même bien rageant de ne pas avoir confirmé ici.

Au debrief, Mauro et Bob reviennent sur la question des ailerons. Il est vrai que ceux ci semblent apporter une meilleure adhérence en virage, surtout en sortie. Nous faisons partie des dernières curies de pointe à nous en passer. Je décide donc de faire un essai à Brands Hatch.

At NOuveau Monde, I'm trying to do from the inner side of the track the whole group. Stewart insists, our wheels touch .... and his race ends there. Luckily, I can continue and the fight goes on with the Ferrari and McLaren.

Unfortunately after a few laps, thick smoke escapes from my Maserati and public expectations are probably also showered than mine. What bad luck for my national grand prix!

A few minutes later, I console myself with the 4th place of Bob, and pretty 8th place of Mauro Bianchi. But after the two previous races, it's still good infuriating not to have confirmed here.

In debrief, Mauro and Bob return to the issue of wings. It is true that they seem to provide a better cornering grip, especially on output. We are part of the latest advanced curies to do without. I decided to do a test at Brands Hatch.

J'aime beaucoup le circuit de Brands Hatch, et c'est avec beaucoup de plaisir que je m'y rends cette fois encore. Le tracé me convient bien et l'ambiance champêtre qui y règne me plait. Nous décidons de nous reconcentrer sur deux voitures, laissant à Mauro Bianchi le soin de chercher un pilote payant pour sa Wookey-Ford. Finalement, il laissera le volant à son frère Lucien qui semble faché avec Cooper.
Je me suis enfin décidé à placer des ailerons sur nos Wookey. Pour cela, je me suis raproché de l'école de l'air de Salon de Provence et un professeur de l'école m'a fait bricoler cela en deux temps trois mouvement par ses étudiants après que je lui ai montré des photos de Rouen !
Je ne suis pas le seul, et la majorité des équipes de pointe testent des dispositifs plus ou moins bricolés. Le plus spectaculaire est celui de Luigi qui a monté une aile supplémentaire un peu alambiquée sur la dérive arrière qu'il utilise depuis le début de saison. McLeod hérite d'un aileron identique à ceux des Brabham d'usine. Les Lotus d'usine et de Siffert arborent une immense aile directement appuyée sur les suspensions arrières. La tout semble bien fragile et personne ne souhaite les imiter pour le moment. Même les Eagle ont un petit truc bricolé sans que je n'arrive à savoir qui de Dan Gurney ou de Pierre en est à l'origine. En tout cas elles sont en aluminium Reynolds "hecho en Espana".
Quant à "Ramon" il est tout heureux que Don Pedro lui offre un splendide moteur Cosworth, lui aussi suronté d'une petite aile.
Chez Matra, Beltoise arbore aussi des ailerons, mais Stewart, après les avoir testés, semble préférer s'en passer.

Aux essais, Hill domine une nouvelle fois son sujet et prend la pole devant Stewart. Je partage la seconde ligne avec Hulme, devant Luigi et Ramon tout heureux de leurs nouvelles voitures. Suivent Ickx, Nathy Wehbé, McLeod, Oliver et le reste de la troupe. 30 voitures en tout ! Le public est ravi.

La piste est encore un peu humide au départ, mais tout le monde fait le choix de partir en pneus secs. Je me place dans le sillage de Hill et y reste 26 tours jusqu'à ce qu'une mince fumée bleue ne s'achappe de son moteur et qu'il rentre au stand. A ce moment de la course, j'ai déjà 5 secondes d'avance sur les Ferrari. Une avance qui continue d'augmenter quelques temps avant que je ne lève le pied et me contente de contrôler jusqu'au drapeau à damier. C'est ma troisième victoire en championnat, et sans doute la plus facile jusqu'ici.
Luigi rentre enfin dans les points et Bob marque aussi, malgré des problèmes avec ses freins qui l'ont fatralentir et me concéder un tour.
Ramon qui s'était intercalé entre les Ferrari est bien malheureux de devoir abandonner, sur bris de suspension.
Les deux tiers du plateau n'atteint d'ailleurs pas l'arrivée vivtime d'ennuis divers. Sans compter Silvio Moser et Chris Lewis qui ont perdu beaucoup de temps aux stands et finissent sans être classés.

I'm not the only one, and the majority of the top teams are testing more or less makeshift devices. The most spectacular is that of Luigi who mounted an additional wing a little convoluted to backdrift in use since the beginning of the season. McLeod inherits an identical fin from factory Brabham. Lotus factory and Siffert sport a huge wing directly resting on the rear suspensions. The all seems very fragile and nobody wants to imitate this currently. Even the Eagle have tinkered a little trick that I do not happen to know who from Dan Gurney and my friend Pierre is at the origin. In any case they are aluminum Reynolds "Hecho en Espana".
As for "Ramon" , he is happy as Don Pedro offers him a splendid Cosworth engine, also topped by a small wing.
At Matra, Beltoise also wears fins, but Stewart, after testing, seems to prefer to do without.

At Practice, Hill dominates again about it and take pole ahead of Stewart. I share the second row with Hulme, before Luigi and Ramon all happy with their new cars. Follow Ickx, Nathy Wehbe, McLeod, Oliver and the rest of the troop. 30 cars in all! The audience is delighted.

The track is still damp at the start, but everyone made the choice to go on dry tires. I place myself in the wake of Hill and remains there 26 laps until a thin blue smoke will get out its engine and he returned to the pits. At this point in the race, I have five seconds ahead of Ferrari. An advance that continues to rise some time before I lift the foot and am content to control until the checkered flag. This is my third victory in the league, and probably the easiest so far.
Luigi finally enters the points and also Bob, despite problems with his brakes which have slowed him and let me a lap ahead.
Ramon who was sandwiched between the Ferraris is unfortunate to have to give up on suspension breakage.
Two thirds of the entries does not also reached the finish victim of various troubles. Besides Silvio Moser and Chris Lewis who lost a lot of time in the pits and finish without being classified.
