Dans mon idée, toute cette deuxième quinzaine de juillet devait être consacrée à ma remise en forme afin de disputer le difficile Grand Prix d'Allemagne sur le terrifiant circuit du Nürburgring. Mais quelques événements imprévus vinrent pimenter ces journées d'intense travail physique.

 

D'abord une merveilleuse nouvelle, sous la forme d'un coup de fil de mon ami Luigi Mennella. Le 21 juillet, Nathy venait de le faire papa d'un petit garçon.
- Comment vas tu l'appeler?
- Nassim Giorgio Corrado !
- Corrado? C'est McLeod le parrain?
- Si ! Il est très pieux, ça nous a l'air d'une bonne idée à Nathy et moi. Il a accepté et nous l'attendons, il m'a dit qu'il venait tout de suite !
- Tu m'excuses? Je serai là pour le baptème, mais je dois continuer ma rééducation pour te battre au Nürburging !
- Gesù! fai del tuo meglio, ma avrò le ali! Faudra être fort pour me battre !


Le surlendemain, j'apprends dans le journal que McLeod a été arrêté en Suisse ! Dans sa hâte à rejoindre Naples pour visiter son filleul, il a commis de multiples infractions routières sur les routes helvètes et s'est fait coincer au poste frontière du Gothard. Que s'est il vraiment passé? Impossible de le savoir, mais il semble qu'il ait insulté les policiers et douaniers suisses et le voilà condamné à 15 jours de prison ferme !
Une histoire de fous !

Par ailleurs, le pauvre JP Beltoise se voit rattrapé par l'affaire Giunti. Sa licence est suspendue pour deux mois par la Fédération.


Enfin, de graves problèmes touchent l'usine Cosworth qui prend un énorme retard dans ses révisions moteurs. Dépassé par son succès, avec jusqu'à 60 moteurs à entretenir en F1, plus les versions d'Endurance, le motoriste anglais n'a pas les infrastructures ni le personnel suffisant pour tenir le rythme. Quelques uns, comme Denis Briot ou Erick Bernard se tournent vers Heini Mader. D'autres prennent le risque de continuer avec un seul moteur. Evidemment, le problème touche surtout les écuries de milieu et de fond de grille.
Bonnier qui doit faire son retour flanqué d'Helmut Marko, va devoir partager avec le jeune autrichien le seul moteur dont il dispose !

In my idea, all this second half of July was to be dedicated to my fitness to compete in the difficult German Grand Prix on the terrifying circuit of Nürburgring. But some unforeseen events spurred these days of intense physical work.

First, a wonderful piece of news, in the form of a phone call from my friend Luigi Mennella. On July 21st, Nathy had just made him a little boy's dad.
- How are you going to call him?
- Nassim Giorgio Corrado!
- Corrado? This is McLeod the godfather?
- Yes ! He's very pious, it seems like a good idea to Nathy and me. He accepted and we are waiting for him, he told me he was coming right away!
- Will you excuse me? I'll be there for the baptism, but I have to continue my rehabilitation to fight at the Nürburging!
- Gesù! fai del tuo meglio, me avrò le ali! Will have to be strong to beat me!

Two days later, I learn in the newspaper that McLeod was arrested in Switzerland! In his haste to reach Naples to visit his godson, he committed multiple road traffic offenses on the Swiss roads and got stuck at the Gotthard border post. What really happened? Impossible to know, but it seems that he insulted the Swiss police and customs officers and here he is sentenced to 15 days in prison!
A crazy story !

Moreover, the poor JP Beltoise is caught by the Giunti affair. His license is suspended for two months by the Federation.

Finally, serious problems affect the Cosworth plant which is a huge delay in its engine overhauls. Exceeded by its success, with up to 60 engines to maintain in F1, plus versions of Endurance, the English engine does not have the infrastructure or the staff enough to keep pace. Some, like Denis Briot or Erick Bernard turn to Heini Mader. Others take the risk of continuing with a single engine. Obviously, the problem mainly affects the middle and backcourt stables.
Bonnier, who has to make his comeback flanked by Helmut Marko, will have to share with the young Austrian the only engine he has!

Mennella avait prévenu, il a bien failli tenir promesse !
On commence à le connaître l'italien qui a ressuscité la Scuderia Centro Sud depuis 1967 et en a fait un constructeur à part entière. Personnage complexe, attachant, écorché vif, aussi prompt à la colère qu'au rire, il s'était mis un peu en retrait comme pilote l'an dernier. Il n'avait participé qu'à une poignée de courses, pour se concentrer à la construction et à la gestion de son écurie.
Cette année, il est revenu au volant, puisque sa compagne et équipière attendait la naissance de son fils Nassim. Il avait démontré qu'il n'avait rien perdu de son talent, même si de nombreux soucis mécaniques ne lui ont pas toujours permis de concrétiser de bons résultats.
Mais là, pendant les essais, il survole littéralement l'Enfer Vert.
Pour moi, ces essais sont un calvaire. Je ne sais ce qui l'emporte des douleurs dorsales, de la fatigue musculaire ou des nausées mais je n'arrive pas à boucler un tour complet à vitesse normale. Chaque fois que je me lance, je dois couper mon effort et je rentre au ralenti. C'était bien la peine de faire cravacher mon équipe pour me préparer une voiture de pointe !
Je décide de la confier à Patrick Depailler, à la place du mulet qu'il avait au départ. Du coup, il gagne plusieurs places et partira en 4ème ligne.
Luigi fait donc la pole, devant les Vaillante et les Ferrari. Taka Katsumoto est 6ème sur la grille.
Bonnier et Marko se partagent la seule M7C qui dispose d'un moteur, Bonnier bat son jeune équiper d'un dixième de seconde et prend la 36eme et dernière place sur la grille.
Le Suisse Dave Criblez, seul éliminé aux essais dont la voiture est en état de rouler est finalement autorisé à courir après une pétition lancée par son compatriote Joseph Siffert et signée par la totalité des concurrents.

Parti en tête, Luigi Mennella va mener pendant 4 des 12 tours de piste.
Sous la pression de l'association des pilotes et de la CSI, les organisateurs ont modernisé les infrastructures du gigantesque circuit de vingt-trois kilomètres. L'asphalte a été rénové et plusieurs bosses ont été rabotées. Toutefois certaines subsistent et plusieurs pilotes y ont abîmé leurs suspensions durant les essais. Certains virages ont quelque peu été redessinés afin d'être moins tortueux. Quelques bacs à graviers apparaissent en guise de dégagements.
 
Mais surtout des barrières en acier ARMCO ont été installées à des endroits de la piste jugés critiques, afin de retenir les voitures en cas d'accident. Ce dispositif est pleinement soutenu par Jackie Stewart, mais ne fait pas l'unanimité. Par son expérience de motocycliste, John Surtees est ainsi particulièrement opposé aux glissières qui peuvent jouer un rôle dramatique si elles sont mal installées.

Steve Warson est chargé de harceler Mennella, et de le pousser dans ses retanchements.  Mais ce faisant, il fatigue certes l'Italien, mais sollicite aussi beaucoup ses freins et ses pneus. Au quatrième tour, il laisse passer Vaillant qui aussitôt se porte à la hauteur de la SCS et la dépasse. Warson lève alors totalement le pied, sa voiture exsangue ne pouvant plus suivre le rythme des premiers.
A mi course, Ickx s'extrait du peloton et rejoint la tête. Il passe Mennella et se met à observer Vaillant, qui pour le moment régale le public de son pilotage propre et élégant.

En toute fin de course, Ickx porte son attaque. Le jeune Belge est un des rares pilotes à connapitre le circuit par coeur. Un exploit de mémoriser ainsi ses dizaines de virages, de bosses, de pièges. Une qualité qu'il a déjà démontré lors de sa victoire surprise en 1968 et qu'il démontre encore en portant son estocade dans le denier tour.

Starting in the lead, Luigi Mennella will lead for 4 of 12 laps.
Under the pressure of the pilots' association and the ITUC, the organizers have modernized the infrastructure of the gigantic circuit of twenty-three kilometers. The asphalt has been renovated and several bumps have been planed. However some remain and several pilots have damaged their suspensions during the tests. Some corners have been redesigned to be less tortuous. Some gravel pits appear as clearances.
 
But above all, ARMCO steel barriers were installed at critical points on the track, in order to restrain cars in the event of an accident. This device is fully supported by Jackie Stewart, but is not unanimous. John Surtees's experience as a motorcyclist is particularly opposed to slides that can play a dramatic role if they are not properly installed.

Steve Warson is responsible for harassing Mennella, and pushing him into his retentions. But in doing so, he certainly tired the Italian, but also asks a lot of his brakes and tires. In the fourth lap, he passes Vaillant who immediately goes up to the SCS and exceeds it. Warson lifts his foot completely, his bloodless car being unable to keep pace with the former.
At the halfway point, Ickx exits the peloton and rejoins the head. He passes Mennella and begins to observe Vaillant, who for the moment regales the public of his own and elegant piloting.

At the very end of the race, Ickx carries his attack. The young Belgian is one of the few pilots to know the circuit by heart. A feat of memorizing his dozens of turns, bumps, traps. A quality he has already demonstrated during his surprise victory in 1968 and that he still demonstrates by wearing his thrust in the last lap.

Pour la troisième fois, le chanteur Robbie Williams s'aligne sur une March engagée par Frank Williams. Il tient à se qualifier afin de tourner des images de lui en course pour un projet de film.

For the third time, singer Robbie Williams aligns with a March initiated by Frank Williams. He wants to qualify to shoot images of him in the running for a movie project.

Malgré la disparition de Jochen Rindt, le Grand Prix d'Autriche attire encore un grand nombre de spectateurs, dont comme l'année précédente une forte colonie d'Italiens qui ont traversé la frontière pour encourager les Ferrari. L'Österreichring apparaît comme l'un des circuits les plus rapides de la saison, en concurrence avec Silverstone, et derrière l'inégalable Monza. En Grande-Bretagne, Jackie Stewart l'a emporté avec une moyenne de 209 km/h soit... un kilomètre/heure de plus que Jacky Ickx lors de son succès en Autriche en 1970.

Sauf surprise, cette épreuve doit voir la consécration de Jackie Stewart. Vainqueur de cinq des sept Grands Prix disputés cette saison-là, l'Écossais a 32 points d'avance sur Jacky Ickx et 34 sur Ronnie Peterson, ses deux derniers rivaux. Pour empêcher son sacre, Ickx doit gagner ou terminer au moins deuxième tout en souhaitant que Stewart ne marque aucun point. Quant à Peterson, il doit absolument triompher. Mission difficile donc pour les deux hommes qui, à vrai dire, n'ont aucun espoir.

Mauro Forghieri et les ingénieurs de Ferrari se cassent toujours la tête pour parvenir à réduire les vibrations qui frappent les 312 B2. Pour la course, l'équipe va monter des pneus Firestone B28 de type « profil haut », comme ceux utilisés en 1970. Mais les vibrations du train arrière vont perdurer. Les châssis ne sont également pas au mieux puisque Clay Regazzoni utilise la voiture de réserve, c'est-à-dire celle de Mario Andretti, absent en Autriche.

Face aux performances désastreuses de la Matra de Chris Amon en Allemagne, l'état-major du constructeur français a décidé de faire l'impasse sur ce Grand Prix. Les ingénieurs préparent un nouveau moteur pour le Grand Prix d'Italie.

Chez McLaren, Teddy Mayer s'est lassé des piètres performances de Peter Gethin et a décidé de le mettre à la porte. Il est remplacé par Jackie Oliver, jugé plus expérimenté... mais qui devra se contenter d'une M14A. De toute façon, après les débuts encourageants de la M19 à Kyalami aux mains de Denny Hulme, cette voiture ne s'est pas révélée à la hauteur des espoirs placés en elle. L'équipe se concentre sur la future saison, mais doit cependant se passer du concepteur Ralph Bellamy qui a été recruté par Bernie Ecclestone pour rejoindre Brabham.

La Brabham BT33 de Tim Schenken adopte elle aussi un capot avant en forme de bouclier. Cet ancien modèle remanié apparaît plus performant que la BT34 « à pinces » pilotée par Graham Hill.

Peter Gethin a trouvé immédiatement un point de chute. BRM décide de lui confier une P160. Howden Ganley obtient lui aussi et enfin ce modèle, jusqu'alors seulement piloté par Jo Siffert et feu Pedro Rodríguez. La vieille P153 que pilotait jusqu'alors Ganley est donnée à l'Autrichien Helmut Marko qui peut ainsi faire ses débuts en Grand Prix.

Jo Siffert étrenne une nouvelle version du moteur V12 BRM utilisant un vilebrequin Tasmane datant de 1967, mais permettant un gain de 500 à 700 tours/minute en régime maxi. Mais cette évolution n'est pas utilisée en course. En revanche, la bobine qui a tant causé de souci aux pilotes BRM lors des dernières courses est désormais fixée sur l'un des couvercles d'arbres à came. Jusqu'alors elle se situait au-dessus de l'arceau de sécurité et ne cessait de se débrancher...
John Surtees garde Rolf Stommelen dans son équipe malgré leur altercation du Nürburgring. Mais le pilote allemand devrait partir dans les semaines à venir. Surtees est bien embêté car, à 37 ans, il envisage de raccrocher son casque pour se consacrer à la direction de son équipe. Mais il n'a pas de successeur au volant...

On voit aussi l'apparition d'un Autrichien de 22 ans aux dents de lapin qui jusqu'ici s'est fait modestement remarqué dans les pelotons de F2 et de F3, Nikolaus « Niki » Lauda. Moyennant un subside, le jeune homme à l'occasion de participer à son Grand Prix national au volant de la March 711 habituellement pilotée par Nanni Galli. Cependant, son moteur Alfa Romeo a été démonté pour être remplacé par un V8 Ford-Cosworth. La boîte de vitesses Alfa Romeo est de plus mal adaptée à la voiture. Lauda va donc connaître des débuts laborieux...
Nanni Galli est malgré tout présent au volant d'une autre 711 équipée d'un bloc Alfa... celle de son compère Andrea de Adamich, qui ne peut donc pas participer à la course.
