The 2001 Formula One World Championship has started with the opening round, the Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit. In all of the four practices we saw the usual suspects up front as we had seen the year before, putting themselves on the positions first through fourth, with Michael Schumacher setting the pace in three of the four sessions.
Qualifying however, would be a bit of a different story. A session with changing weather conditions, ultimately ending in a nearly completely dried up track when the session was about to end, saw Giancarlo Fisichella really surprisingly snatching the pole away from Michael Schumacher.
Another surprise in this qualifying session was Tarso Marques as the Brazilian in his return to Formula One saw himself qualifying in eleventh position, simply because of the fact that the returning Minardi driver was exactly at the right place at the right time as the former CART driver went on to do a final qualifying run while the track was essentially dry, this final lap by Marques made sure that he wouldn't start his first race since 1997 at the back of the grid.
The race was one to forget very quickly for defending World Champion Michael Schumacher, the German took the lead immediately after the lights went out but would spin off the track while leading a couple of laps later, which resulted in a broken rear wing and therefore a retirement from the Australian Grand Prix. Ralf Schumacher would take the lead from his older brother and while he was attacked for a long time by Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard, the Williams driver would ultimately dominate this race as both Häkkinen and Coulthard would find themselves in trouble with each other, the two time World Champion from Finland ultimately had to retire from the race due to a suspension failure.
With multiple incidents happening, causing different strategies due to damage repairs for multiple drivers, it was Giancarlo Fisichella after dropping back at the start, who would find himself all of a sudden back in second place. Heartbrake however, would occur for the Italian as Fisichella would blow up his engine during the final lap of the race while being chased by Juan Pablo Montoya.
This meant that Williams would score a 1-2 for the first time in more than three years, despite the bad luck that happened to both McLaren drivers and ultimately both of the Ferrari drivers as well, Williams has really showed during this weekend that they're definitely a serious force to be reckoned with again.
A true heartbrake for Giancarlo Fisichella in what would've been a fantastic closure of a great weekend for the Benetton team which struggled so much during the winter.
Nick Heidfeld finished the race in a, what he called himself, disappointing tenth position.
Gaston Mazzacane would end up in 14th place in what was his first race for Prost Grand Prix.
Barrichello ran a promising race, until he got in trouble while lapping backmarkers which cost him a front wing. Sixth place was the result for the Brazilian in this race.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen would finish in fourth place after he was really unhappy with his ninth place in qualifying.
Fernando Alonso saw David Coulthard pass him after the Scottish driver had to make an extra pitstop due to a lost front wing while battling his team mate.
Jacques Villeneuve closes the gap behind Tarso Marques after the Canadian spun off twice while battling for a position around the top ten.
Jean Alesi stayed out of trouble all day long, resulting in an incredible and very emotional third place after the Prost team failed to score a single point in 2000.
Juan Pablo Montoya still running in third place around this time of the race, closing the gap to Giancarlo Fisichella.
Ralf Schumacher on his way to his very first career victory in what turned out to be, dominating fashion.
Giancarlo Fisichella driving in second place before his Renault engine would expire in the final lap of the race.
Jarno Trulli on his way to fifth place after the Italian was, like his team mate, very unhappy with how his qualifying session went. Trulli had to start this race from the tenth spot.

The Malaysian Grand Prix turned out to be another action packed race. With Michael Schumacher topping two of the four practices and with Ralf Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen topping the other two, it was not Michael but Ralf Schumacher who surprisingly stole away the pole from his older brother with five minutes to go in qualifying. Ferrari is starting to wonder what's happening and how it actually is possible that after a great winter, they're missing out on the pole once again!
The race saw Michael Schumacher taking the lead after qualifying second before the first corner was even reached. The three times World Champion would however find himself in trouble shortly after the pit sequence started as a little incident happened after the German made his first pitstop, it sadly happened while lapping backmarkers. Lapping them turned out to be everything but easy on this day and after his first little incident, Schumacher even spun off the final corner as well which cost the Ferrari driver a huge amount of time and afterwards, probably the win.
Once again it was Ralf Schumacher who would take the victory after being chased by David Coulthard, Coulthard however would spin off the track twice. One of those happened while attempting to seriously attack the younger of the two Schumacher brothers, the other spin happened simply because the McLaren driver was pushing way too hard. After all it was Ralf Schumacher winning for the second time in a row, which makes it an unbelieveble start of the season for 'Schumacher Jr.' while his brother was just able to get a fourth place finish after a last lap pass on David Coulthard.
Mika Häkkinen and another very surprising performance for third spot, this time by Nick Heidfeld, completed the podium behind Ralf Schumacher. Olivier Panis grabbed the final point by running an alternative strategy after having ran most of the race just within the top twelve. For both of the Jordan boys it was a day to forget quickly as both lost their front wing once, finishing far out of the points paying places.
Right now it's obviously Ralf Schumacher leading the championship with 20 points. The main championship contenders by the bookmakers, of course Michael Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen, have a lot to make up or their odds might change big time even before the San Marino Grand Prix. This race of course will be on the schedule right after the next round which will be held at the circuit called Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in Brazil.
Jacques Villeneuve ran a good race but it wasn't enough for points, unlike his teammate.
Mika Häkkinen wasn't particularly running an impressive race but staying out of trouble got him a fantastic second place finish in this years' Malaysian Grand Prix.
David Coulthard was chasing for victory but too many mistakes only brought him a P5 at Sepang International Circuit.
Nick Heidfeld was being chased by Jacques Villeneuve until the Canadian would have to make another pitstop, unlike the German on his way to an eventual third place.
Luciano Burti would just finish outside the points in seventh position.
Enrique Bernoldi drove a great race, just like Burti, and was chasing the Brazilian for the best finish position outside the points.
Ralf Schumacher was obviously, once again due to the many things that happened to multiple front runners during this race, unstoppable today.

The Brazilian Grand Prix turned out a bit different than the previous two races in terms of results but the action was once again as packed as we saw in Australia and Malaysia. The race started dry but the conditions would soon change to overcast and the race would even end with light rain weather conditions which meant multiple drivers chose to make a run to pitlane to switch their slick tyres for either intermediate or even wet tyres.
Michael Schumacher started the race from pole position and would be dominating the first part of the race, something we saw as well in Australia and Malaysia. The Ferrari team would however do the completely wrong thing in terms of strategy as the race went on. They chose to pit their championship contending driver relatively late for his final pitstop and just after the three times World Champion exited pitlane, the sprinkles were quickly changing to a bit more serious rain which caused Schumacher to run very wide while lapping a backmarker which would ultimately lead to a small crash into the wall. This little incident would cost Michael Schumacher his front wing, Schumacher would of course have to make another pitstop for a front wing change and also would change from slicks to wet weather tyres in the process.
These unfortunate events made Michael Schumacher finishing far outside of the points, making this already quite horrible start of the season for him even worse. Mika Häkkinen would win the race in dominant fashion after Ferrari's number one driver had to give up the lead. Behind Häkkinen it was Ralf Schumacher who came home in second, Rubens Barrichello completed the podium after he had an almost race long battle with Williams' leading driver. Juan Pablo Montoya finished the race in fourth position with the Jordan's of Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jarno Trulli behind him, rounding out the points finishing positions.
Ralf Schumacher obviously maintains the championship lead with 26 points, Mika Häkkinen thanks to this victory moved up to second in the standings with 16 points and is therefore looking at closing the ten point gap to the very strong performing Williams driver from now on.
Mika Häkkinen chasing Michael Schumacher, just after the overcast weather conditions had arrived.
Jacques Villeneuve ran an impressive race at this stage and was even putting the pressure on Juan Pablo Montoya.
Therefore the 1997 World Champion decided to try an overtake move on the rookie which sadly ended this way.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen ran a decent race but the Jordan doesn't seem to be as competitive during the season as they were during the winter tests.
The sprinkles were starting to become serious weather drops.
Mika Häkkinen would however stay on slick tyres as he thought that making another pitstop would be too much of a risk, especially because there was quite much rain but it wasn't raining necessarily hard enough according to the Finnish driver.
Mika Häkkinen during the final lap of the race, still on slick tyres, on his way to his 19th career victory.

The San Marino Grand Prix was another unforgettable race and arguably the most exciting race of the season so far. Michael Schumacher started from pole position for the second time in a row and had a serious good start, pulling away from his rivals very quickly. However, the racing Gods don't seem to like both Michael and Rubens Barrichello this year so far and such a thing became clear again as this race went on.
Because Michael Schumacher would spin while exiting the final corner but because the German had built such a huge gap he would still maintain the lead, the lap after this mistake the three times World Champion would however have to make his final pitstop and this is where another thing would not fall into the right place for Schumacher. The defending World Champion would miss his braking point a little bit while entering pitlane, causing the Ferrari driver to have a slight crash into the wall, which made him lose his front wing, this incident would cost him about fifteen seconds if not more and he it was considered pure luck that Ferrari's leading driver was able to continue the race without too many problems afterwards.
Williams driver Ralf Schumacher would inherit the lead after his brothers' struggles, Michael Schumacher had dropped as far back as fifth but would ultimately make up lots of time and ultimately end up in second spot, chasing his little brother for what could be his first victory of the season. Sadly this chase came too late and it would be Ralf Schumacher taking his third victory out of four races this season so far. Behind 'Schumacher Jr.' it were Michael Schumacher and Heinz-Harald Frentzen that completed the podium, making it a completely German podium in Imola!
Eddie Irvine would, after a tough start this season for Jaguar so far, finish this race in the fourth position. This is a great result for both Irvine and his team and definitely the reward for simply staying out of trouble in this race. Juan Pablo Montoya would still be able to salvage a fifth position after the Colombian led for quite some laps earlier in the race but would get caught up in an incident with both the McLaren cars of David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen.
Jenson Button would score the final point and celebrated this like a victory. Button was really slow all weekend long and even had to start this race from the very final grid position! Therefore this sixth spot is a fantastic way for both Button and his Benetton team to close out a very tough weekend.
After four races, it's time to look at the championship standings as they are right now:
Driver's Championship
1. Ralf Schumacher - 36 pts
2. Mika Häkkinen - 16 pts
3. Juan Pablo Montoya - 11 pts
4. Michael Schumacher - 9 pts
5. Heinz-Harald Frentzen - 9 pts
6. Rubens Barrichello - 5 pts

8. BAR - 1 pt
9. Benetton - 1 pt
Michael Schumacher pulling away from the field after a dominant performance in qualifying.
Juan Pablo Montoya leading the pack behind Michael Schumacher from second place.
A little later in the race, it actually was looking like Montoya would be the top performing Williams driver today.
While Montoya ultimately found himself in trouble with both of the McLaren drivers, Rubens Barrichello lost his front wing while trying to overtake Jarno Trulli after his first pitstop. Barrichello was still running in fifth with his damaged car when Luciano Burti tried to overtake the Ferrari driver, Burti would hit the one time Grand Prix winner, causing Burti to lose his own front wing while Barrichello lost his rear wing as well in this incident.
Frentzen stayed out of trouble all day and even ran the race briefly in second place to ultimately end the day on a nice P3.
Eddie Irvine, unlike his teammate who was looking for a serious points finish as well, drove a race an experienced driver should do on a day like this. In a relatively uncompetitive car, the driver from Northern-Ireland would finish this race on a fantastic fourth place.
Polesitter Michael Schumacher, chasing down Heinz-Harald Frentzen for second place.
Ralf Schumacher seems to do the right thing every race so far, a combination of good pace and staying out of trouble got him another victory making it 3 out of 4 for the German.

The Spanish Grand Prix was definitely another one to never forget, it actually seems that this season as a whole is slowly developing as one that shouldn't be forgotten quickly. During qualifying it was Ralf Schumacher who would snatch the pole away from his older brother Michael Schumacher and with this, definitely showing what he and his Williams are made of this year. Right after the start of the race however, it was Michael Schumacher that would almost literally right after the lights went out, overtake Williams' leading driver and shortly after that put on quite a gap to his little brother. The three times World Champion would be taking his first pitstop of this race about two laps earlier than most of his rivals would and this afterwards would probably cost the older of the two Schumacher brothers another chance for victory.
Because Ferrari's number one driver would drop back right behind David Coulthard after his first stop and shortly after, spin off while attempting to overtake the Scottish driver. Luckily for the German, he wouldn't damage his car but he would lose some more places due to this incident and this all on a track where overtaking has been proven to be really hard over the years.
Besides this incident, we also saw Jarno Trulli attempting to overtake Mika Häkkinen who had lost his front wing a couple of corners before that while battling Ralf Schumacher for the lead. Trulli however, would also lose his front wing while attempting to overtake the damaged car of Häkkinen, the Finnish driver himself would find himself having to make a little trip through the gravel with his already damaged car due to the actions of the Italian Jordan driver. Considered McLaren's lead driver would however still reward himself with a sixth place finish while Trulli would only be able to salvage a twelfth place after his collision with Häkkinen.
But Michael Schumacher, Mika Häkkinen and Jarno Trulli were not the only drivers having an adventurous day in Barcelona, also Rubens Barrichello had many things to tell the press after this race was finished. Barrichello started the day with some interesting battles with Häkkinen and Juan Pablo Montoya. While attempting to overtake the McLaren driver, the Brazilian would spin off the track but luckily for him, keep his car off the wall. It cost Ferrari's second driver however quite some time and positions, causing Barrichello to ultimately get right behind Juan Pablo Montoya. Barrichello would ultimately make the exact same mistake while attempting to pass Montoya as he did while trying to overtake Häkkinen, resulting in another spin but keeping his car unscathed. Barrichello would ultimately finish outside the points paying positions due to all these misfortunes and would get to the checkered flag in eighth spot.
Ultimately it was Ralf Schumacher who would take another win in the Spanish heat, Kimi Räikkonen would stay out of trouble all day and score his very first points in F1 with an incredible and almost unbelieveble second place finish. Behind 'Schumacher Jr.' and Räikkonen it was Juan Pablo Montoya who completed the podium. Nick Heidfeld would make it an even better day for the Sauber Petronas team by finishing this race on the fourth spot, Michael Schumacher came home right behind Heidfeld in fifth while Mika Häkkinen would take the final points paying position.
Michael Schumacher leads the race after immediately taking over the lead from his little brother after the lights went out.
And the defending World Champion would be pulling away rather quickly.
While Schumacher dominated at this point of the race, his team mate Rubens Barrichello was involved in some interesting battles on the track.
Barrichello would however get into a spin while attempting to overtake Mika Häkkinen, therefore the Brazilian dropped back a few places and was here about to take on Juan Pablo Montoya for another interesting battle.
'Rubinho' seriously putting the pressure on 'JPM'.
Barrichello would put his car to the inside of Montoya's, almost immediately after this picture was taken and would ultimately spin out again, making this a day to forget very quickly for the one time Grand Prix winner.
Juan Pablo Montoya closing in, albeit a little too late, on an impressive performing Kimi Räikkonen.
In this picture Ralf Schumacher was still battling Mika Häkkinen, the Finnish driver would soon after this picture was taken however make some slight contact with the Williams of Schumacher, resulting in a broken front wing for the McLaren driver. After this collision, 'Schumacher Jr.' again proved to be unstoppable today with taking another victory and therefore extending his points lead.

The Austrian Grand Prix turned out to be a race of attrition from the start. It was a true spectacle with many things happening at times both drivers and fans wouldn't expect it. Formula One's visit to Austria turned out to be a relative successful weekend for Ferrari, the team that has had so much bad luck this year so far. Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello shared the front row for the first time this year and shortly after the lights went out, a kind of unbelieveble thing would happen.
We all do remember the crash we had in Austria in turn 1 the year before, do we? Well, the first turn saw another incident between Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard. Besides the McLaren duo, championship leader Ralf Schumacher was also involved in it. All three drivers would ultimately retire and they took a couple of others with them as well. Michael Schumacher was dominating the first part of the race but that has basically been the story of this year, the older of the two Schumacher brothers is arguably the quickest driver out there but in 2001, he and his team simply don't seem to be able to close the deal.
And today, it sadly would be no different for the three time World Champion. When Ferrari's lead driver was lapping backmarkers and struggled, not for the first time this year, in doing so his team mate would close in on him rapidly. The two would even make contact, causing both drivers to spin and it was ultimately Schumacher that would damage his car in this collision as he lost his front wing in the process.
Rubens Barrichello came away with 'just a spin' and could continue the race without any problems, the Brazilian wouldn't be bothered by anybody for the rest of the race and was therefore able to take his second career win and in doing so, took the honor of taking Ferrari's first win in 2001. Behind Barrichello it was Kimi Räikkonen that would grab another incredible second place finish for Sauber, Juan Pablo Montoya completed the podium and ended the race in third spot.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve would complete the top six. What a race this was again and what a great way for Kimi Räikkonen to take his TWO very first points finishes in F1.
Michael Schumacher leads, right after the start of the race.
Rubens Barrichello after contact with his team mate, spins his car but keeps it out of the wall.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen would spin off all by himself but still would finish the race in fourth position.
Juan Pablo Montoya would make another appearance on the podium thanks to a third place finish.
However Montoya had to do some overtaking as he also got caught up in the turn one incident, he did luckily not damage his car though and was able to drive to the front without too many problems.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen chasing Jacques Villeneuve after the German had spun while exiting turn 3.
Kimi Räikkonen slowly closing in on Olivier Panis who was running second but had yet to make his final pitstop, dropping him just outside the points paying positions.
Räikkonen on his way to another incredible P2 finish.
Today it was Barrichello's day, after his incident with team mate Michael Schumacher, nobody could slow him down.
