Re: Post your F1 Challenge '99-'02 Videos/Screenshots here
Yesterday, the legend Niki Lauda passed away. I just knew this when I woke up this morning, and I got pretty sad. He was one of my favourite champions ever, and I wanted to do a humble tribute to him, with F1 Challenge pics of his Formula One years. Rest In Peace Niki.
(I recommend to open the pics in a new window, to see them completely)
1971 - The Austrian GP in the fabulous Österreichring saw the debut of this austrian legend, racing with a March 711. He did not finish the race, retiring at lap 20. Was his one and only race that year.
1972 - His first full season in Formula one saw him still racing with March, scoring a 7th place in Kyalami (South Africa) as his best in that year full of problems.
1973 - Niki Lauda leading the Canadian Grand Prix for some laps, under the unstopping rain. He did race with BRM that year, scoring only 2 points with a 5th place at Belgium, but doing remarkable races like Monaco, and this one at Canada.
1974 - His first season riding with Il Cavallino Rampante, Ferrari. Talented but still not mature enough, Niki fought for the championship until the race 14 of 15, fighting hard with his teammate Clay Regazzoni. The Monaco duel was one of them.
1975 - After some difficulties in the early stages of the season, Niki was unstoppable with the Ferrari 312T, winning his 1st World Championship title at Monza (3rd in that race), and the first for Ferrari after 1964.
1976 - Niki Lauda and James Hunt fought beyond their limits in 1976. Here they fight in the French Grand Prix, at Paul Ricard, before the Nürburgring accident that would change Niki's life, forever.
1977 - With a tense atmosphere inside Ferrari after the self-retirement of Niki at Japan 76, where they lost both titles, he was determined to show that he still was the boss. And he did, only 3 wins (the last one at Netherlands, Zandvoort) but he was the most consistent driver that season, winning his 2nd World Championship Title at Watkins Glen, 2 races before the ending. Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter and James Hunt tried, but they couldn't win him.

1978 - Despite winning his 2nd title the last season, he did left Ferrari due to the bad atmosphere and the diffences between him and Enzo Ferrari. He joined to the Brabham Alfa Romeo project for 1978, having "more or less" a competitive season, similar than Ferrari but both far behind than the invincible Lotus 78 and 79 of Mario Andretti & Ronnie Peterson.
1979 - That year Brabham Alfa Romeo lost all their competitiveness and stayed far, far behind than the leaders (Ferrari, Ligier, Williams and Renault at some points), scoring points just at 2 races, with a 4th place as his best result in 1979 at Monza. The lack of speed of this car made him lose his hopes, and decided to retire after Canadian's qualifying (just 1 race before the end of the championship). Good performance at Monaco and the non-championship race at Imola were also remarkable performances. He would retire that year... but not forever.
1982 - After 2 years out of racing, focusing himself to his airline company, Niki returned to Formula One with the McLaren MP4/1B at 1982, having a good season with 2 wins, at Long Beach and here at Brands Hatch. Behind his teammate John Watson, but still close to the title contenders of that chaotic season, he finished 5th in the drivers world championship.
1983 - Year of transition for him and McLaren. Lack of competitiveness in almost all season, his best result was 2nd in the Long Beach race, behind his teammate Watson. Despite that, the car became so much faster when they replaced Ford-Cosworth normally aspirated engine, to the TAG-Porsche Turbo. Flashes of what was about to come...
1984 - Finally a great car for him and McLaren again at 1984. Niki fought with one of the best drivers of all history, Alain Prost, until the last race at Portugal, where he won his 3rd and last World Championship title with only 0,5 points ahead the Professor (probably Lauda's student that year, probably the 2 most smarter drivers in history).
1985 - Niki retired definitely at the end of that season. Far behind his teammate Prost, who finally won his 1st World Championship title that year, he still managed to do some good races in 1985, the last flashes of the great champion and legend that he was. He won his last race (and the only one at 85) in Netherlands, Zandvoort (as this pic shows), ahead Prost and ignoring team orders about letting Prost by. His last race was in Australia, Adelaide, and he did retire when he was leading the race.

Hello everyone!! I hope august has been a good month for everybody ^^
Now that vacations are ending and summer is arriving to its final stages, it's time to race in the classical september race; the Italian GP at Monza, one of my favourite gp's of all.
This is a perfect moment to remember some of the greatest moments (not all) lived at Monza, mostly from Ferrari's side:
1956 - Juan Manuel Fangio wins his 4th World Championship title over Stirling Moss, in a chaotic race (well, fifties were something totally different of what F1 has become). In this pic, riding by the insane and dangerous "oval" curve used in 1955, 1956, 1960 and 1961.
1964 - John Surtees won the Italian GP of 1964 season and scored his 2nd win of the season after winning in Germany (Nürburgring Nordschleife). This win suposed a great step in front, and highly increased his options of winning the championship, as he did in the last race of the season in Mexico.
1970 - Despite the incredible win of Clay Regazzoni in his 1st season for Ferrari, which was his 1st win in F1 in his debut season (but not full season), and despite the happiness of the Tifosi, that weekend will be always remembered, sadly, because of Jochen Rindt's tragic death in the qualifying session, riding with his Lotus 72 with no rear wing.
1975 - This time, Ferrari's party and happiness was on the top, as Niki Lauda won his 1st World Championship title exactly that weekend. As Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo said, probably the happiest day of his life.
1979 - Another epic win for Ferrari, as Jody Scheckter won his 1st and only World Championship title, and Ferrari won the Constructors title. Their arrival to the finish line, one alongside each other, was one of the most beautiful days in Monza's history. Time to party at Ferrari, they could never imagine that they would not won any title until Schumacher in 2000.
1988 - The legendary Enzo Ferrari passed away few days before the Italian Grand Prix of 1988. Like if it was something made by gods, the invincible McLarens retired both in this GP (the only race that they didn't won in 1988), and Ferrari did a 1-2 that suited as a tribute for the lost "Il Drake".
1996 - This day was extremely happy for the Tifosi, oxygen for the hard times, as Michael Schumacher scored his 3rd win of the year in the best place possible, doing a great race keeping Jean Alesi's Benetton behind him, after Damon Hill's retirement.
2006 - After all the dominant years for Ferrari, Michael Schumacher scored a very special win in Monza 2006 in front of all the Tifosi. That was the day when Michael announced his (1st) retirement, cutting differences with Fernando Alonso (retired in this race by engine blow), fighting for the championship.
2010 - To this date, unless Ferrari wins this weekend... it's the last win for Ferrari at Monza. With a masterclass performance from Alonso, and a masterclass job of the Ferrari mechanics in the pit stop, Fernando Alonso managed to win the Italian GP in front of Jenson Button's McLaren, a very strong rival that day.
Will Ferrari win again this weekend? We will see

2019 - Finally yes!!! 9 years after the last win for Ferrari, Charles Leclerc wins the Italian GP for Ferrari, in a superb way. In a style proper to the big names of this wonderful sport, Leclerc has done an awesome race like a champion, holding the 5 times World Champion (in the way of his 6th championship) Lewis Hamilton behind him the major part of the race, in a superb way. Surely the future of the Cavallino Rampante for the following years, and the definitive confirmation of his talent. Here ends up my particular tribute to Monza... at the moment.
Cheers, best wishes to everyone and enjoy this wonderful track, Monza!!
