Et les inscriptions continuent d'affluer.

Bob Bondurant avait failli faire l'impasse, mais un accord avec le team Wookey, sous l'insistance de son "cousin" Henry, le chef mécanicien lui permettent de venir dans l'Eifel avec sa BRM P261. Une autre P261 est confiée à Christian Lewis, le pilote anglais de Lola afin de s'aguerir en vue du retour prochain du constructeur en F1.

Bob Bondurant is back with his BRM P261. He shares pits and transport facilities with Team Wookey due to the insistance of his "cousin" Henry, Wookey's chief mechanic

Christian Lewis, the Englishman who is currently a Lola works driver had a leave from Eric Broadley to try himself in the upper category while his secret prototype is still on building. He will drive another BRM P261.

Dans cette fin de jeudi après-midi, nous atteignons enfin les collines de l'Eiffel en l'Allemagne de l'Ouest et la piste mythique du Nürburgring. Alors que nos mécaniciens déchargent ma Cooper et la BRM de Bob, je vais au bureau de la direction de course pour m'enregistrer et obtenir les dernières nouvelles.

Les 7 volants en attente sont maintenant attribués et l'origine russe du mystérieux concurrent albanais est confirmée.

La participation d'une équipe de derrière le rideau de fer est un véritable choc. Le niveau de la technologie soviétique est restée un mystère à ce jour, et beaucoup croyaient à ce moment qu'ils atteindraient la Lune avant les Américains. La course va raconter une autre histoire. Mais un parti pris politique ne permettra pas de comprendre la leçon. Nous apprenons donc que "Freundschaft und Frieden -Team" alignera un Moskvith Mir avec un moteur Vaz de 2.4l et des pneus Kama. Le pilote est nommé Alex Samoilov. Rien de bien n'est connu de lui, sinon qu'il est né à Vladivostok, sur la côte Pacifique de la Sibérie et est âgé de 28 ans.

Les autres voitures sont conduites par un Belge, 2 Français et 4 pilotes anglais, tous bien connus, même si certains sont au volant d'une F1 pour la première fois.


In this late Thursday afternoon, we finally reach the Eiffel hills of West Germany and the mythical track of the Nürburgring. While our mechanics unload my Cooper and Bob's BRM, I go to the race direction office to check in and  get the latest news.

The 7 pending drives are now attributed and the Russian origin of the mysterious Albanian entry is made clear.

121 Alex Samoilov Frieden und Freundschaft-Team Moskvitch Mir Vaz L4 2,4l Kama

The participation of a team from behind the Iron curtain is a real shock. The level of soviet technology remained a mystery at this date, and many believed at this time that they would reach the moon before the Americans. The race will tell another story. But political bias will not allow for the lesson to be understood. SO we learn that "Frieden und Freundschaft-Team" will race a Moskvith Mir with a 2.4l Vaz engine and Kama Tyres. The pilot is named Alex Samoilov. Nothing much is known about him except he is born at Vladivostok, on the Pacific Coast of Siberia and is aged 28.

The other cars are driven by one Belgian, 2 French and 4 English drivers, all well known even if some are driving a F1 for the first time.

Le vendredi matin, je me balade à travers le paddock de F2 afin de regarder les différentes équipes britanniques avec une idée dans mon esprit. Ma première visite va à l'équipe Lola. Comme je m'y attendais, je trouve Eric Broadley, une personne très agréable et compétente. Je discute un peu avec lui. Je vois la proximité qu'il entretient avec John Surtees. Je pense que s'il veut construire une F1 l'année prochaine, ce sera avec un soutien Honda. Ce ne sera pas pour plaire à mes nouveaux partenaires de Citroën. Alors je repars rechercher d'autres solutions.
Les meilleures équipes sont bien sûr étroitement soutenues par les constructeurs, Brabham et Lotus. Cependant je remarque une superbe Brabham BT23-Ford "racing Green" engagée en privé par John Cole pour son petit-fils Nicolas. Le camion porte encore le nom de DSC Coachworks, la société familiale basée à Sutton, en Angleterre. John a conduit tout le chemin vers le Nürburgring et garde un œil sur l'équipe, mais je suis impressionné par le très jeune garçon qui semble être le vrai patron de l'opération. Avec un seul mécanicien, sa voiture semble aussi bien préparée que celles de Roy Winkelmann et de leur zone de stands est propre et rangée comme une clinique dentaire.

J'ai une petite conversation avec Nicolas et j'apprécie immédiatement le gars. Nous sympathisons et je demande son avis au sujet de qui serait le meilleur atelier en Grande-Bretagne pour me construire une F1 si je viens avec un prototype et les plans.

- "Je parie que nous sommes les meilleurs pour le travail, aussi longtemps que vous apportez les blusheets." il répond, en plaisantant à moitié.

Je ris avec lui. Puis, regardant droit dans ses yeux, je comprends qu'il est sérieux à ce sujet. Il dit alors qu'il avait déjà démontée et re construite entièrement sa Brabham, juste pour comprendre comment elle est faite. Une autre conversation avec son grand-père me convainc encore plus. John est un véritable honnête homme sans faux semblants. Il m'en dit plus sur l'histoire de Nicholas. Il confirme mon impression. Nicholas semble être un homme de passion, précis, méticuleux, travailleur, tenace. Juste le genre de qualités que vous associez avec l'expérience, dans ce jeune homme qui a refusé un volant en F1 ce week-end pour continuer à apprendre son métier sur cette piste difficile et redoutable. Pas le type de tête brûlée stupide. Mais peut-être exactement ce dont j'ai besoin.

Nous convenons de nous revoir après les essais du vendredi dans un agréable et très typique Bierstub à proximité du circuit. J'appecie la bière allemande. Nicholas la trouvé trop froide à son goût, mais après un certain temps se met à siroter avec plaisir.

Nous reprenons notre discussion, et entrons dans les détails sur les outils et le personnel qu'il aura besoin d'embaucher. Je lui dis que ce  n'est vraiment pas mon problème, je préfère qu'il s'organise comme il le souhaite, puis me dise un prix. Il sourit.

- "Pour être honnête, j'avais déjà prévu de construire ma propre F2 l'année prochaine, donc si vous apportez le moteur et les plans, le coût ne sera pas vraiment différent Vous devrez également prendre la voiture comme elle est, nous ne pouvons pas courir une saison pour vous, je veux garder mes mécaniciens pour ma saison de F2 ".

Et, ce qui pourrait sembler incroyable de nos jours avec des armées d'avocats pour discuter ces contrats pendant des mois, nous nous regardons droit dans les yeux et nous nous serrons la main, Et voilà! C'est comme çà que le "contrat" se signait à l'époque.



On the friday morning, I browse through the F2 paddock and watch the different British teams with an idea in my mind. My forst visit goes to the Lola Team. As I expected, I find Eric Broadley, a very nice and competent person. I chat with him a little. I see the close proximity he entertains with John Surtees. I feel that if he wants to build a F1 next year, that will be with Honda support. This will not please my new partners from Citroën. So I walk by and search for other solutions.
The best teams are of course closely backed by the constructors, Brabham and Lotus. However a remark a shiny british green Brabham BT23-Ford entered privately by John Cole for his grandson Nicholas. The lorry still bears the name of DSC Coachworks, the company family based in Sutton, England. John drove it all the way to Nürburgring and keeps an eye on the team, but I'm impressed by the very young lad who seems to be the real boss of the operation. With only one mechanic, his car seems as well prepared as those of Roy Winkelmann and their pit area is tidy as a dental clinic.

I have a small chat with Nicholas and appreciate the guy. We sympathize and I ask his opinion about who would be the best workshop in Britain to build me an F1 if I come with a prototype and bluesheet plans.

- "I bet we are the best for the job, as long as you bring the blusheets."  he answers, half joking.


I laugh with him. Then looking right in his eyes, I understand he is serious about it. He then says he already unbuilt and re built entirely his Brabham, just to understand how it is done. A further conversation with his granddad convinces even more. John is a true honest no-nonsense sort of person. He tells me more about Nicholas story. He confirms my impression. Nicholas seems to be a man of passion, precise, meticulous, hardworking, stubborn. Just the kind of qualities you associate with experience, in this young man who refused a drive in F1 this weekend to continue to learn his trade on this difficult and fearsome track. Not the silly hothead type. But might be exactly what I need.

We agree to meet back after the Friday practice in a nice and very typical Bierstub near the circuit. I appeciated the german beer. Nicholas found it too cold for his taste but after a while sip it with delight.

There we resume our discussion, and spek more in details about the tools and personnel he will need to hire. I tell him it is not really my problem, I want him to organize himself as he wishes, then tell me a price. He smiles.

- "To be honest, I already planned to build my own F2 next year, so if you bring the engine and bluesheets, the cost will not be really different. You will also have to take the car as it is, as we can't run a season for you, I will keep my mechanics to run my F2 season."

And, what could seem incredible in our days with armies of lawyers discussing such contracts for months we stared at each other right in the eyes and handshaked, Et voilà ! That was it. A deal was done.

Le vendredi après-midi, c'est la première séance de qualification. Personne n'y attache beaucoup d'importance à ces essais du vendredi comme la piste est froide, et les pilotes ont dû apprendre, ou se rappeler son tracé de 22km ce qui n'est pas facile. Me souvenant souvenir de mpiètre prestation de l'année dernière, je ne cherche pas à accélérer, mais je reste axé sur la découverte des moyens mnémotechniques pour trouver le rythme. Cette piste est avant tout une question de rythme. Une fois que vous le comprenez, vous le mémorisez. L'astuce m'a été donnée par mon ami Jacky Ickx qui a réussi à se faire prêter une Brabham de l'an dernier avec l'aide de pas moins que Ron Dennis, le mécanicien bien connu de l'écurie. Astucieusement, je tente de le suivre pendant 2 tours, et je dois utiliser toute la puissance de mon brillant Maserati pour ratrapper dans la longue ligne droite ce que j'ai perdu dans la dernière section de courbes. Mais j'ai appris assez dans la section de Flugplatz à Karussel. Je sollicite tous mes 12 cylindres pour le dépasser devant les stands et je reste devant jusqu'à Karussel, où je le laisse passer, et le suit de plus près cette fois ... C'est un vrai virtuose malgré son âge. Je ne suis pas trop mauvais moi-même, mais encore, je suis impressionné par sa maîtrise d'une voiture qu'il découvre  alors que je conduis ma Cooper depuis un an et demi maintenant. A la fin de la journée, mon temps est d'environ 8'30" soit 10 "derrière Clark par exemple.



On Friday afternoon came the first qualification practice. No one attached much importance to this Friday practice as the track was cold, and the pilots had to learn, or remember its 22km path which is not an easy process. Remembering my very poor show last year, I did not try to speed up but focused on discovering some mnemonic ways to learn the rhythm. This track is really a matter of rhythm. Once you understand it, you memorize it. The tip was given to me by my friend Jacky Ickx who achieved to get a year-old Brabham with help from no less then Ron Dennis, Brabham well known mechanic. Astutely, I tried to follow him during 2 laps, and I had to use all the power of my brilliant Maserati to catch in the long straight back the time I lost in the latest section of curves. But I learnt enough in the section from Flugplatz to Karussel. I Used all my 12 cylinders to pass him before the pits and stayed in front up to the Karussel, then let him pass, and followed him more closely this time...  He is a real virtuoso however young he is. I'm not so bad myself, but still, I'm impressed by his mastering of a car he just discovers while I drive my Cooper for one year and a half now. At the end of the day, my time is around 8'30. 10" behind Clark for example.

Les essais du samedi sont perturbés par de multiples problèmes techniques dans les grandes écuries. Du coup, à la surprise générale c'est Jacky Ickx qui garde le meilleur temps avec sa Brabham vintage jusqu'aux derniers instants ou Hulme la lui arrache pour une demi seconde. Enfin, in extremis, Clark arrive enfin à boucler un tour clair et relègue tout le monde à 10 secondes ! Quel champion !
Je suis plutôt content de mes essais. Je suis dans les temps des voitures d'usine, qualifié en 4ième ligne aux cotés de mon ami Luigi. Mais tout de même à 6 secondes de Jacky Ickx. Le jeune belge a vraiment créé l'exploit!



Trials Saturday are disrupted by multiple technical problems in large stables. Suddenly, to everyone's surprise it's Jacky Ickx keeps the best time with his Brabham vintage until the last moments when Hulme snatches for a half second. Finally, in extremis, Clark finally comes to complete a clean lap, relegating everyone to 10 seconds! What a champion!
I'm pretty happy with my tests. I'm in the times of factory cars, qualified in 4th line alongside my friend Luigi. But still 6 seconds of Jacky Ickx. The young Belgian has really created the feat!

Une étoile est née. Pour sa première course en F1, sur le légendaire Nurburgring aet devant tous les meilleurs pilotes du moment, un jeune Belge a écrit une page d'histoire.
Jacky Ickx qui domine la course en F2, grâceaux généreuses primes d'engagement versées par l'ADAC avait récupéré le volant d'une Brabham de l'an passé. Après avoir créé la sensation dans les essais, seulement battu par Jim Clark et Deny Hulme . Dès le premier tour, il se retrouve derrière Jim Clark et parvient à s'y maintenir pendant 4 tours jusqu'à l'abandon de l'écossais sur crevaison. Il a ensuite résisté au retour de Dan Gurney, qui a dépassé Hulme et Brabham et a remporté une victoire absolument sensationnelle! Le public et les journalistes ont été stupéfaits.
De mon côté, je profite du temps de la course pour oublier mes soucis de patron d'équipe et je me concentre sur mes trajectoires tout en écoutant ma voiture tout en résistant à quelques ténors comme Surtees. Au total, je me retrouve à gratter un petit point. Le premier depuis Spa. Je suis satisfait avec un sourire d'autant plus large que cette course sage ne peut plaire au peuple Michelin qui tirent les ficelles chez Citroën.



A star Is Born. In his first race in F1, on the legendary Nurburgring before all the best drivers of the moment, a young Belgian wrote a page of history.
Jacky Ickx who should have participate  the race in F2, was, thanks to the generous commitment of premiums paid by ADAC driving a year-old Brabham. After creating the sensation in practice, only beaten by Jim Clark and Deny Hulme. From the first lap he finds himself behind Jim Clark and manages to keep there for 4 laps until the abandonment of the Scottish on puncture. He then resist the return of Dan Gurney, which exceeded Hulme and Brabham and won an absolutely sensational victory! The public and journalists were stunned.
From my side, I get the time to race to forget my team boss worries and I apply myself to stay on track while listening to my car while taking away some tenors like Surtees. Over the dropouts, I find myself scratching a small point. The first since Spa. I am satisfied with the smile, especially as this wise race can only please the Michelin people who pull the strings at Citroen.

Trois semaines se passent entre l'Allemagne et le Canada. Pendant que mes petits camarades se dispersent entre courses d'Endurance et F2, je travaille d'arrache pied sur mon projet. Je me rends à Dieppe ou Jean Rédélé me fait un accueil mitigé. D'une part il est ravi que le travail de Jean Boileau m'intéresse, de l'autre ce qu'il voudrait c'est que Renault lui fasse un moteur compétitif. Vendre le projet à Citroën ne l'enchante pas plus que çà. Surtout qu'il est très proche d'Elf, et que j'arrive forcément avec Total dans mes bagages.
Tout finit par se résoudre par une simple transaction financière quand, sur ma suggestion, Rédélé découvre le pot aux roses à Billancourt qui pose immédiatement son veto au projet de F1 Alpine. Du coup, plutôt que d'envoyer son prototype en chantier à la casse, il accepte de le finir et de me le livrer pour octobre, avec les plans à la condition expresse qu'Alpine ne soit jamais citée officiellement. Franchement, çà m'arrange vis à vis de Citroën qui n'a pas l'intention de faire de la réclame pour le losange !
De Dieppe, je prends la navette pour l'Angleterre et me rend chez DSC Coachworks qui héberge la petite structure de course de Nicholas Cole. Là j'inspecte le matériel d'usinage de très haute qualité dont le jeune anglais s'est équipé. L'atelier est très propre, parfaitement rangé. Il ressemble plus à un atelier d'horlogerie qu'à un garage. Je suis très favorablement impressionné, et nous réglons quelques détails autour d'une traditionnelle bière anglaise et d'une superbe partie de darts au pub local avant mon retour en France.
Je continue mon périple par le Quai de Javel, où je rencontre les pontes du marketing de Citroën. Coincidence, j'y retrouve des copains de prépa-HEC ce qui facilite le contact. Nous parvenons vite à un accord. Si je perds ce sera des défaites Wookey, si je gagne, des victoires Citroën. C'est de bonne guerre.
Mon odyssée passe ensuite par Clermont, où je rencontre successivement un adjoint de la direction, lui même gendre de je ne sais quel M. Michelin, le service marketing et enfin le service compétition. Une fois obtenu l'indispensable feu vert "familial", le reste se passe sans accroc et non seulement Michelin soutient mon accord avec leur filiale Citroën mais me fournitra les pneus gratuitement, avec des ingénieurs sur les circuits qui travailleront aussi sur mes suspensions.
Au bout de ce marathon qui aura duré une quinzaine de jours, je peux enfin passer une semaine à me reposer chez moi et prendre quelques nouvelles de mon équipe.
Jean-Claude Ogier a fait un travail fantastique. La concession tourne comme une horloge. Les Maserati continuent à se vendre bien, sur la lancée de ma victoire à Spa. Il a aussi travaillé à un plan concernant la fusion avec la concession Citroën située le long des remparts d'Avignon. La complémentarité de nos garages, implantés l'un au Nord l'autre au Sud de la ville en pleine expansion depuis qu'elle héberge des milliers de rapatriés, la continuité de la gamme allant de la 2CV aux Maserati en passant par les mythiques DS, tout est étudié, calibré.  Du beau travail que je n'aurais jamais eu le temps de mener à bien. Je consacre le reste de la semaine à discuter avec Albert Bernard, le concessionnaire.
Je comprends qu'il ne veut pas vendre. Il a bâti sa concession pour la céder à ses enfants. Bernard et Fils doit devenir Bernard-frères. Je comprends cela et finis par lui proposer un partenariat d'égal à égal. Nos deux garages vendront des Citroën et des Maserati. A eux la zone Sud, à moi la Zone Nord. Le Team Wookey viendra faire des animations de vente avec ses véhicules de course. En échange nous mutualiseront nos fichiers clients et nos ressources humaines. Encore une fois, les connaissances de Jean-Claude Ogier m'auront été très utiles pour conclure le deal.

After this marathon that lasted a fortnight, I can finally spend a week to rest at home and take some news from my team.
Jean-Claude Ogier has done a fantastic job. The concession runs like clockwork. Maseratis continue to sell well, on the momentum of my victory at Spa. He also worked to a plan for the merger with Citroën dealership located along the city walls of Avignon. Le premier Grand Prix du Canada se tient à Mosport dans l'Ontario à l'occasion de l'Exposition Universelle de Montréal. Les organisteurs ont offert les frais de transport à 20 monoplaces. Ferrari n'envoie qu'une voiture d'usine, mais offre généreusement son deuxième ticket de transport à la Scuderia Centro Sud. Outre les voitures d'usine, il y a tout de même Bonnier, Siffert, Irwin et les deux voitures du Team Wookey pour Bob Bondurant et moi-même. Sur place nous retrouvons quelques concurrents locaux sur des voitures de seconde main.

The first Canadian Grand Prix is at Mosport in Ontario during the Universal Exhibition in Montreal. Organizers Book the offered transportation costs to 20 cars.
