Au début de l'année 1903, les automobilistes en général et particulièrement les partisans des courses de vitesse étaient comme on l'a vu, plongés dans la désolation. Systématiquement, les pouvoirs publics refusaient les autorisations nécessaires. D'un trait de plume, le ministre avait déjà supprimé la course de Pioule, puis les épreuves diverses de la semaine de Pau.
Cependant, l'Automobile-Club de France organisait la course Paris-Madrid. Du gouvernement espagnol les autorisations nécessaires avaient été vite obtenues. Il n'en fut pas de même avec le gouvernement français. On demeura longtemps dans l'incertitude, et, quelques jours avant l'épreuve, l'Automobile-Club ne prenait, vis-à-vis des concurrents, que l'engagement formel de la course « Irun-Madrid ».

Enfin, après des démarches nombreuses et pressantes de la part des personnalités marquantes du monde automobile et politique, l'autorisation de courir en France fut accordée. Pour une fois, les prophètes de malheur eurent raison. Les accidents furent nombreux. Il y eut des morts et des blessés, non pas seulement parmi les coureurs, mais parmi les spectateurs.
Et, dès lors, on put croire que c'en était fait définitivement des courses d'automobiles sur, route, car ce navrant Paris-Madrid produisait l'effet contraire à celui qu'en attendaient ses organisateurs.
Et cependant jamais course d'automobile n'obtint pareille popularité auprès du public, jamais épreuve ne provoqua, parmi les constructeurs, pareille émulation.

Le règlement de la course fut arrêté dès les premiers jours de février par l’ACF, de concert avec le Royal Automobile-Club d'Espagne.
En dehors du classement individuel de chaque véhicule, on décida qu'il serait procédé à un classement par équipes. L'épreuve devait se courir en trois étapes qui étaient :
   ► 1- Paris-Bordeaux,
   ► 2- Bordeaux-Vittoria
   ► 3- Vittoria-Madrid, soit une distance totale de plus de 1380 kilomètres.
Le soir qui vit la clôture définitive des engagements, trois cent quatorze véhicules se trouvèrent engagés.

 
At the beginning of 1903, motorists in general and particularly supporters of speed racing were, as we have seen, plunged into desolation. Systematically, the public authorities refused the necessary authorizations. With the stroke of a pen, the minister had already canceled the Pioule race, then the various events of the Pau week.
However, the Automobile-Club de France organized the Paris-Madrid race. The necessary authorizations were quickly obtained from the Spanish government. It was not the same with the French government. We remained in uncertainty for a long time, and, a few days before the event, the Automobile Club only made a formal commitment to the competitors for the “Irun-Madrid” race.

Finally, after numerous and urgent representations from prominent figures in the automotive and political world, authorization to race in France was granted. For once, the prophets of doom were right. Accidents were numerous. There were deaths and injuries, not only among the runners, but among the spectators.
And from then on, we could believe that road racing was definitely over, because this distressing Paris-Madrid produced the opposite effect to that expected by its organizers.
And yet never has a car race achieved such popularity with the public, never has an event provoked such emulation among manufacturers.

The regulations for the race were decided in the first days of February by the ACF, in concert with the Royal Automobile Club of Spain.
Apart from the individual classification of each vehicle, it was decided that a team classification would be carried out. The event was to be run in three stages which were:
   ► 1- Paris-Bordeaux,
   ► 2- Bordeaux-Vittoria
   ► 3- Vittoria-Madrid, a total distance of more than 1,380 kilometers.
The evening which saw the definitive close of the engagements, three hundred and fourteen vehicles were engaged.

Le dimanche 24 mai, vers trois heures du matin, à la sortie de Versailles, fut donné le premier départ, à une minute d'intervalle. D'abord ce furent les grosses voitures, puis les Voitures légères, enfin, en dernier lieu, les voiturettes et les motocyclettes. La route avait été formellement interdite à toute autre voiture que les engins de course.
On a bien souvent épilogué sur cette course Paris-Madrid. Ce qu'il y a de certain, c'est que l'enthousiasme qu'elle suscita dans le public fut colossal. On estima à cent mille le nombre des personnes qui se transportèrent de toutes parts autour de la pièce d'eau des Suisses, à Versailles, où se donnait le départ.

A 3 h. 45, Jarrott sur sa Dietrich, à qui le sort avait donné le numéro 1, partait au milieu des acclamations de la foule, et de minute en minute, tous les concurrents s'élançaient.
Sur les 550 kilomètres du parcours, on retrouvait la même affluence, surtout aux endroits où l'on pensait que la nature du terrain permettrait aux concurrents d'atteindre les plus grandes vitesses. Malheureusement, le service, d'ordre, en maints endroits, laissa à désirer : gendarmes et pompiers furent plus occupés à voir la course qu'à maintenir la foule sur les bas-côtés de la route. Il en résultait pour les concurrents, comme l'expliqua un reporter, la perpétuelle appréhension, qui ne fut hélas que trop justifiée, d'avoir constamment devant les yeux une route barrée par le public dont l'imprudence n'a d'égale que son ignorance du danger.

Depuis Chartres, L. Renault tint constamment la tête, et son arrivée à Bordeaux fut chaudement acclamée. Derrière lui suivaient, dans un ordre que les incidents inséparables de la course modifiaient à tout instant,Jarrott, Gabriel, Salleron qui, avec leurs Mors, vont être premier et troisième du classement général, Baras, de Crawhez, etc.
Les voitures, aussitôt arrivées à Bordeaux, se rendaient à l'Exposition située aux Quinconces, et toute l'après-midi, la foule ne cessa de défiler devant les puissants engins de course.
Le soir, la réception organisée à l'A. G. bordelais fut empreinte de tristesse, car on connaissait les accidents qui endeuillaient l'épreuve.


On Sunday May 24, around three o'clock in the morning, at the exit of Versailles, the first departure was given, one minute apart. First there were large cars, then light cars, finally, lastly, carts and motorcycles. The road had been strictly prohibited to any car other than racing machines.
We have often talked about this Paris-Madrid race. What is certain is that the enthusiasm it aroused in the public was colossal. It was estimated at one hundred thousand the number of people who traveled from all sides around the Swiss pond, at Versailles, where the departure took place.

At 3 a.m. 45, Jarrott on his Dietrich, to whom fate had given number 1, set off amid the cheers of the crowd, and minute by minute, all the competitors took off.
Over the 550 kilometers of the course, we found the same crowds, especially in places where we thought that the nature of the terrain would allow the competitors to reach the highest speeds. Unfortunately, the service, in terms of order, in many places, left something to be desired: police and firefighters were more busy watching the race than keeping the crowds on the sides of the road. The result for the competitors, as a reporter explained, was the perpetual apprehension, which was unfortunately only too justified, of constantly having before their eyes a road blocked by the public whose imprudence is only matched by his ignorance of the danger.

From Chartres, L. Renault constantly held the lead, and his arrival in Bordeaux was warmly acclaimed. Behind him followed, in an order which the inseparable incidents of the race modified at every moment,Jarrott, Gabriel, Salleron who, with their Mors, will be first and third in the general classification, Baras, de Crawhez, etc.
The cars, as soon as they arrived in Bordeaux, went to the Exhibition located in Quinconces, and all afternoon, the crowd continued to parade in front of the powerful racing machines.
In the evening, the reception organized at the A. G. Bordeaux was full of sadness, because we knew of the accidents which mourned the ordeal.

La liste de ces accidents est longue et douloureuse: Il y a eu six morts : les trois mécaniciens des chauffeurs Tourand, Porter et Loraine-Barrow puis le soldat Dupuy, tué à Angoulême par l’automobile de M. Tourand, l’ouvrier Caillou, victime du même accident, et une femme écrasée sur la route d’Ablis qu’elle traversait, avec une folle insouciance, au moment du passage des premiers concurrents.

The list of these accidents is long and painful: There were six deaths: the three mechanics of the drivers Tourand, Porter and Loraine-Barrow then the soldier Dupuy, killed in Angoulême by Mr. Tourand's automobile, the worker Caillou , victim of the same accident, and a woman crushed on the road to Ablis which she was crossing, with wild carelessness, when the first competitors passed by.

Terry (Mercedes N° 290) arrive à la hauteur d’un concurrent et tente de le dépasser. Ce dernier donna un coup de volant à gauche. La roue gauche se brisa, le réservoir à essence contenant 120 litres se creva. Les flammes sortant du pot d’échappement y mirent le feu et lorsque la voiture fut enfin arrêtée, tout l’arrière flambait.

25.05.1903 - Interdictions gouvernementales

Le soir même du 24 mai, le gouvernement prenait la décision d'interdire la continuation de la course et en même temps qu'il la notifiait au gouvernement espagnol, il faisait parvenir aux autorités de Bordeaux des ordres en conséquence. Les accidents qui s'étaient produits forçaient le ministre de l'intérieur à prendre ce parti et l'on apprit bientôt que le gouvernement espagnol adoptait la même mesure sur son territoire. La course était donc achevée.
Le départ de Bordeaux s'effectua dans des conditions presque grotesques, et n'étaient les douloureux souvenirs qui obsédaient les esprits, chacun se fut amusé de l'excès de précautions prises à ce propos.
Conformément aux ordres reçus, la municipalité bordelaise avait fait mettre les scellés sur tous les véhicules.
La plupart des voitures furent expédiées par le chemin de fer, à peine quelques-unes revinrent par la route à petite allure.
Le classement de la première étape, à qui l'on conserva le nom de course Paris-Madrid, s'établit ainsi qu'il suit

The same evening of May 24, the government took the decision to prohibit the continuation of the race and at the same time as it notified the Spanish government, it sent orders accordingly to the authorities in Bordeaux. The race was therefore over.
The departure from Bordeaux took place in almost grotesque conditions, and were it not for the painful memories that obsessed people's minds, everyone was amused by the excess of precautions taken in this regard.
In accordance with the orders received, the Bordeaux municipality had sealed all the vehicles.
Most of the cars were sent by rail, barely a few returned by road at a slow pace.

Michelin triomphe encore.

De fantastiques vitesses furent réalisées dans cette épreuve, et l'on peut attribuer à ces résultats la prodigieuse poussée de l'automobilisme à dater de celle époque, poussée que n'enrayèrent point les douloureux accidents. Il se trouva que Michelin, fournisseur attitré des premières marques, avait assuré la victoire de Gabriel, celle de
Louis Renault, de Baras, de tous les gagnants. A la vérité, c'était chose à prévoir...Michelin avait fourni la quasi-totalité des concurrents.
Quelle épopée glorieuse que celle de celle maison Michelin !


Fantastic speeds were achieved in this event, and we can attribute to these results the prodigious growth in motoring from that time, a growth that was not stopped by painful accidents. It turned out that Michelin, official supplier of the first brands, had ensured the victory of Gabriel, that of
Louis Renault, from Baras, of all the winners. In truth, this was to be expected...Michelin had supplied almost all of the competitors.
What a glorious epic this is the Michelin house!

▬ Le 24 mai 1903, la course Paris-Madrid, dont le départ a été donné à Versailles à 3 heures 45, traverse le département de la Vienne. Les deux frères Renault pilotent chacun une nouvelle voiture « type O » animée par un moteur de quatre cylindres développant 40 CV. Louis, le plus jeune, « le diable de Billancourt » comme on le surnomme alors est en tête de la course au volant de la voiture numéro 3. Marcel, son aîné, pilote la numéro 63.

On May 24, 1903, the Paris-Madrid race, which started in Versailles at 3:45 a.m., crossed the Vienne department. The two Renault brothers each drive a new “type O” car powered by a four-cylinder engine developing 40 HP. ▬ Il traverse vers 9 heures du matin le village de Minières de Payré à plus de 100 km/h. Il a en ligne de mire Léon Théry, qu’il  essaye de doubler depuis le dernier contrôle à Poitiers. Marcel Renault profite d’une longue ligne droite pour en découdre avec Théry, mais la poussière soulevée par la Decauville l’empêche d’apercevoir un commissaire de course qui brandit un drapeau jaune signalant un dangereux virage à gauche.
Surpris,  Renault tente un coup de volant désespéré mais ne peut éviter un petit talus. La voiture sort de la route, s’écrase dans le fossé, rebondit pour s’immobiliser définitivement, Marcel Renault est très gravement blessé, René Vauthier, son mécanicien, est quant à lui grièvement touché aux jambes.

▬ Le constructeur de Billancourt est transporté dans un état désespéré vers une ferme voisine, dans le hameau de Bourdevay où il décède le 26 mai au soir à l'âge de 31 ans, provoquant une immense émotion dans le monde naissant du sport automobile et de l’industrie.

▬ A ces pages de gloire, il convient, hélas, d'ajouter une page de deuil.
Entre autres victimes innocentes, le sort aveugle avait irrémédiablement frappé, en la personne de Marcel Renault, une famille unie et une maison appelée au plus grand avenir, qui possédait déjà d'ailleurs un magnifique passé.
Au jour fatal et la victoire de Louis, premier de sa catégorie, second du classement général à Bordeaux, est péniblement compensée par le drame de Couhé-Vérac, à la suite duquel Fernand Renault prendra à l'usine la place de son regretté frère Marcel. Dès lors, la maison Renault cessera pour un temps de prendre part aux épreuves de vitesse. Sa prospérité commerciale n'en sera pas atténuée pour cela, puisque, dès 1904,ses ateliers sans cesse accrus auront une superficie de 1200 mètres carrés. Il en sortira les prestigieux engins qui sont aujourd'hui les modèles de l'élégance, de la bonne marche et de la rapidité en matière de véhicules automobiles.
