F1C 1981 Race-by-Race Mod by Neil (neiln1) and Daniel (d4nf1c) / September 2018
This mod includes all the variations in cars and drivers for the 17 teams that qualified for at least one race in 1981--and some cars that didn't qualify, as well (see the Osellas for Spain). We've also included the unofficial South African race at the beginning of the season; Daniel did most of the cars for that one. Be sure to use the tracks we've included because all have the key graphics edited (especially around the starting lines) to be specific to 1981.
INSTRUCTIONS: This mod is intended to be a standalone; simply copy the three folders "1981_TheAudioCommentary" (if you wish to use it), "1981_TheCars" and "1981_TheTracks" over a clean installation of F1 Challenge '99-'02. (I've tried it; it works.) But it shouldn't be too difficult to do your own custom installation (although when I experimented with that I created a mess).
CREDITS: First of all, I want to thank my friend and collaborator Daniel, without whom this mod would never have been finished. Even with his extraordinary help it took us two years to complete it; we first corresponded about it on September 12, 2016, and began in earnest in November 2016. He polished absolutely everything, really sweating the details in a way I have not done working alone (as those with my previous race-by-race conversions of the GP4 mods for 1980 and 1982-1985 know), such as making sure every part of the cars is detachable and consolidating material names in .mts files to make gameplay faster. He also made new cockpits for every team and did extensive testing of all the cars and tracks, especially for AI behavior, which again is the kind of thing that I would have slighted working on my own. Our correspondence, above all, was a continual source of pleasure that kept us both going, reassured that we were not alone in our world-class cases of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
This mod would also not have been possible without the great carsets created by Pedro RippingCorpse for Grand Prix 4; we thank him for his permission to use his work. He has yet to release his 1981 mod (AFAIK), but, as you would expect, a large part of my work consisted of amalgamating material from his 1980 and 1982 mods.
We also owe a great debt to Luigi 70, who created the Lotus 87s and 88s, which are entirely his work (and the basis for the transitional Lotus raced at Monaco that I cobbled together). He also gave us a good start on the Ligier JS 17, for which I finished the graphics.
Thanks to Paul/On Mario especially for hosting our work and that of others for so long, but also for his work on cars and graphics for earlier seasons, much of which remains in 1981. And speaking of hosting, we like everyone else are massively indebted to Wookey for maintaining his website and Facebook page devoted to F1C. There was a time when I thought "F1C will never die" was sounding pretty weak, but thanks to him and others like the community at race4sim, and hopefully with the pleasure this 1981 mod will afford, it'll start seeming plausible again.
The tracks are largely conversions from the rFactor GP79 mod; I'm not sure anymore which ones I did and which ones were done by someone else. I did most of the new artwork for the tracks myself, but the great Track Megaupdate 1.02 1982-1996, which actually includes a number of tracks for 1981, was helpful. It can be found at http://forum.race4sim.com/showthread.php?tid=2
We hope everyone enjoys the mod. Neil and Daniel

Re: F1C 1981 Race-by-Race Mod released
Guys, just to clarify, as this seems to be a frequent topic these days: Neil mentions my dealing with AI behavior. That does not imply I messed around with AIW file, since this is far from being my cup of tea. I did some work on the .hdv files so as to speed up/slow down some of the teams, as well as changed some parameters not to have persistent audio messages like "your engine is about to burst", which seemed to be inherited from older mods not changing rfactor tire/radiator/engine parameters. I wish people who understood the aiw process better than I do could take a look at the AIWs from the season. That would certainly be a great improvement. I mention this somewhere in the topic where I used to post photos and news on the mod. If anyone ventures on that, I would be glad to see these improvements on track.

Las Vegas
Hello guys, I have a problem with the Las Vegas circuit, it's giving an error and I don't know what it is.
The trace shows this:
vidman.cpp 1114: CUBE error loading scene file SEASONDATA\CIRCUITS\United_States\1981_LasVegas\1981_LasVegas.SCN: Error creating vertex buffer
Has anyone come across this? What could this mean?
Does anyone know how to resolve this error?
thanks
