Salut Chris Amon
The New Zealander who had raced for Ferrari from 1967 to 1969, was targeted by fate and was never able to win a GP. He was 73 years old and had cancer
The world of Formula 1 mourns Chris Amon. The New Zealand pilot, who raced with Ferrari from 1967 to 1969, died at age 73 after a long battle with cancer, as has informed his family.
F.1 Amon, often described as the best F1 driver to have never won a race, was part of the New Zealand trio that between the years 60 and 70 landed in Formula 1, along with Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme.
A career that began in 1963 with Lola and Lotus and continued until 1976 with Brabham, Matra, March, Tyrrell, Williams and Ensign.
In total Amon turned in 96 GP and has centered his best result three second places (Great Britain 1968 with Ferrari, Belgium and France 1970 with the March).
Considered one of the most talented and fastest drivers of his years, he became famous for the poor luck in the race.
Mario Andretti said of him: "If you did the undertaker, people would stop dying."
Prototypes : More fortunate however his experience in endurance racing: in 1966 he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with compatriot Bruce McLaren aboard a Ford GT40, while the following year with Ferrari, paired with Lorenzo Bandini, he won both the 24 hours of Daytona is the 1000 km of Monza.
