Does anyone know the meaning behind the color scheme of the BMW M division stripes?

1st time I remember to see those colors was 1974, on a green March for Hans Stuck. The Texaco connect is not clear for me. Before that date, BMW used simply it's checkered blue and white circle. The chequered circle being supposed to evocate an airplane propeller ...
