Re: Mysterious signature
MP4 stands for "Marlboro Project 4".
"Marlboro" references the Marlboro cigarette company (obviously), which increased Ron Dennis' financial input to help him meet the costs of MP4/1's carbon fibre chassis in 1981.
"Project 4" is a reference to Project Four Racing, a F2/F3 team owned by Ron Dennis, which merged with Team McLaren Limited (led by Teddy Mayer) in 1980 to form the McLaren International.

Correction: "M" refers to "McLaren"

This new indication now it creates new doubts, and I did not want any.
If someone could post some pictures to document the mystery of the acronym MP4 could solve the problem.
There is no doubt; it was McLaren that merged in 1980 with Ron Dennis’ Project 4 Racing team.

Re: Mysterious signature
I've checked Doug Nye's McLaren book and he says that the merger between McLaren and Project Four in September 1980 formed McLaren International.
The introduction of the MP4 (McLaren Project 4) in 1981 was the first car of the new partnership/Company.
Personally I have never heard of MP4 referred to as Marlboro Project 4..
