- L’Automobile Club Basco Béarnais, obtient la confiance de l’A.C.F. pour organiser le Grand-Prix national dans la cité Paloise. Le circuit tracé entre les routes de Tarbes, Morlaas et le chemin de Sendets développe 15,835 km à parcourir à vingt-cinq reprises.
En 1929, le pouvoir sportif édicte pour les grandes épreuves une formule à la consommation dont le but est de réduire les vitesses atteintes. Mais fin juin aucun engagement n’est parvenu au siège de l’A.C.B.B., L’A.C.F. reporte la course au 21 septembre et adopte une formule libre : « Voitures de course au-dessus de 1100 cm³, règlement qui n’est pas contraignant, mais qui dissuade Alfa Roméo et Maserati de s’inscrire.
Une propagande efficace permet de recevoir trente-sept engagements pour les vingt-cinq places disponibles, à tirer au sort pour définir l’ordre de départ. Pas moins de dix-sept Bugatti, d’usine ou privées, participent à la course. Peugeot présente deux 174 S vieillissantes, le constructeur Montier également. Avec un bolide chacun Ariès, Bentley, Delage et La Perle complètent la liste des participants.
A 14 heures, les moteurs se déchaînent et c’est le départ.
Philippe Etancelin, qui se bat avec un embrayge défaillant, prend le risque de ne pas ravitailler, et remporte la course. Il ne lui reste même pas un litre d’esence dans le réservoir. Birkin échoue à plus de trois minutes du vainqueur, il réalise néanmoins une remarquable performance au volant de la lourde et volumineuse Bentley
Avec des pointes à 210 km/h, Pau est le circuit routier où l’on atteint la vitesse la plus élevée, c’est également le G.P. de l’ A.C.F. le plus rapide depuis la création de cette épreuve.

In 1929, the sporting authority enacted a consumer formula for major events, the aim of which was to reduce the speeds reached. But at the end of June no commitment reached the headquarters of the A.C.B.B., the A.C.F. postpones the race to September 21 and adopts a free formula: “Race cars above 1100 cm³, regulations which are not binding, but which dissuade Alfa Romeo and Maserati from registering. Effective propaganda made it possible to receive thirty-seven entries for the twenty-five places available, to be drawn by lot to define the starting order. No less than seventeen Bugattis, factory or private, took part in the race. Peugeot presents two aging 174 S, the manufacturer Montier also. With a bolide each Ariès, Bentley, Delage and La Perle complete the list of participants. At 2 p.m., the engines go wild and it’s off.
Philippe Etancelin, who is struggling with a faulty clutch, takes the risk of not refueling, and wins the race. He doesn't even have a liter of gas left in the tank.
