This car is the Tyrrell 016, so this picture was either taken in 1987, or Tyrrell had an exhibition car at that event.
I would say it is an exhibition car. You usually wouldn't cut an airbox in half.

No, this pic is from 1987.

There were no 016's in Detroit in '88.

The bodywork was split like that as normal - This is not an exhibition car.

I worked at Tyrrell as an engineer at the time, and I was at the Detroit race in '87 so I am pretty sure of my facts!
